What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician - Stormwater position at City of Savannah?
This position provides semi-skilled work and is responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to stormwater management under the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program. This role involves conducting inspections of stormwater systems, industrial sites, and construction activities to identify and mitigate potential environmental risks. The Technician will perform tasks such as water quality monitoring, pollution prevention inspections, investigating illicit discharges, and ensuring that stormwater runoff meets regulatory standards.
- Performs routine field inspections of post-construction stormwater infrastructure including storm drains, catch basins, outfalls, tide gates, and other MS4 components.
- Performs wet and dry weather sampling throughout the city; forwards samples to the testing laboratory.
- Evaluates laboratory tests and uploads results to a computer database.
- Performs inspections to enforce the Stormwater Management ordinance.
- Researches pollutant origins.
- Responds to toxic spill incidents.
- Inspects industrial sites and commercial businesses for environmental compliance and pollution prevention purposes.
- Responds to and investigate citizen complaints regarding illicit discharge to the Stormwater system.
- Participates in the Municipal Stormwater Inspection Program to inspect all city-owned sites.
- Maintains various inventories that enable Stormwater inspections (i.e. outfalls, industrial sites,
commercial businesses). - Assists in Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) and Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) efforts by conducting water sampling and assisting in source tracing activities.
- Assists with the preparation of the City’s NPDES MS4 Annual Report to the state’s Environmental
Protection Division. - Represents the Department at public education and outreach activities.
- Responds to emergency situations during and after normal work hours.
- Operates computer network and associated peripheral devices to facilitate analytical drafting and mapping assignments.
- Prepares maps and charts using GIS software.
- Performs manual and computer-assisted drafting functions.
- Plots mapping information in order to maintain mapping layers.
- Serves in Critical Workforce for the Department, requiring service during disasters, weather
events such as tropical storms or hurricanes, etc., in a support role at the Critical Workforce
Shelter or other assigned locations. - Performs other related duties as assigned.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
Work Schedule: Mon - Fri 0800 - 1700
