About the Position
Under the direction of the Building Services Supervisor, this position will perform complex plans examination and inspection duties; review commercial, industrial, and single and multi-family residential project plans, and inspections, related documents, and permits for compliance with building, mechanical, plumbing, energy, and local ordinances; check plans and specifications to assure complete submittal of required information; monitor and provide oversight of peer review and periodic inspections of Port projects in coordination with the Airport Building department; attend pre-application meetings, as assigned; inspect construction sites, installation methods, and materials during construction to assure compliance with codes and regulations. This position is overtime eligible and a member of the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Unit.About Our City
Representative Duties
Perform the duties of a Plans Examiner/Inspector 2 in addition to the following:
- Perform comprehensive plan reviews for commercial, industrial, and single and multi-family residential projects; assure compliance with State building, mechanical, plumbing, energy codes, and local ordinances, and other requirements. E
- Perform commercial/residential building, mechanical, plumbing, and energy code inspections; inspect construction sites for erosion and sedimentation control measures, installation methods and materials during construction and upon completion of single and multifamily residential structures, commercial and industrial projects to assure compliance with State codes and local regulations. E
- Monitor peer review and periodic inspections of Port projects in coordination with the Airport Building department, as assigned. E
- Perform review and attend meetings for pre-applications, as assigned. E
- Assist architects, designers, engineers, contractors, and the public; resolve project design issues. E

Required Education and Experience
- Two (2) years of college-level or trade school course work in structural engineering, construction technology, architecture, or a related field.
- Four (4) years increasingly responsible experience in building construction, building code inspection and plans examination, or related codes compliance activities.
- A combination of education, training and experience that provides the candidate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Licenses and Other Requirements
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License required by date of appointment.
- A satisfactory three-year driving abstract record, submitted prior to hire.
- Valid and current International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Commercial Plans Examiner.
- Valid ICC certifications in other related disciplines; residential plans examiner, building, mechanical and plumbing inspector.
The successful candidate must have successful references and pass a criminal background check prior to hire.
