Seattle City Light’s Vegetation Management Group is seeking a graduate intern to assist with data management, process improvement, performance efficiency, and cost reduction initiatives. The ideal candidate will enjoy modernizing complex work tracking systems and be passionate about data-driven decision-making.

Internship Duration and Hours: Year-long: The timeframe of this internship will be one year in duration, with either a May (semester schools) or June (quarter schools) 2025 start date. Working hours are up to 40 per week during the summer, and a max of 20 per week during the academic year.
Hybrid Work: The City has the expectation that interns will be readily available to report to onsite at work in Seattle in accordance with the current Mayoral mandate of a minimum of 3 days per week. Additional in-person work requirements are based on business need and determined by the hiring authority.

Benefits: Interns do not receive benefits but can obtain a subsidized ORCA pass and accrue sick time that can be used after 90 days of employment.

The background check will involve a criminal history check, which includes conviction and arrest records in compliance with the Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17 and the City of Seattle Personnel Rule 10.3. A driving history review may be conducted in compliance with SMC 4.79.020. Applicants will be provided an opportunity to explain or correct background information.

- Data Inventory & Evaluation: Catalog and assess existing data, identify gaps, and develop strategies for improving data accuracy and completeness.
- System Digitization & Optimization: Modernize and streamline work tracking systems to improve operational efficiency, enhance workflows, and reduce costs.
- Data-Driven Insights: Analyze data to provide actionable recommendations that support decision-making and operational improvements.
- Collaboration & Integration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand business needs, translate them into data analysis tasks, and create scalable solutions.
Required Qualifications:
Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.
Areas of Study:
- Enrolled in an accredited graduate program during their internship.
- Enrolled in an academic program with focus on Business, Operations Management, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Project Management or related field.
You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Experience with data management and analysis tools, including databases, file management systems, and analytics platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with a focus on data analysis and reporting tools such as Excel.
- Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms for creating interactive dashboards and reports.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages including SQL, Python, R, or other related platforms for data manipulation and analysis.
- Familiarity with geospatial or architectural software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or similar tools for spatial data analysis and mapping.
- Highly organized and analytical, with a strong systems-thinking approach to problem-solving.
- Proactive and resourceful, with the ability to identify and resolve issues independently while driving solutions forward.
- Self-motivated and results-driven, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned tasks.
- An excellent communicator, able to present complex ideas and findings clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, both in writing and verbally.
- Collaborative, with strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Knowledgeable in the utility industry, arboriculture, or forestry, or willing to quickly learn about these areas.
