The Facilities Division place a strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients and staff as well as helping to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.
Position Description:
Seattle Parks & Recreation Facilities Division is seeking a Painter Crew Chief to join our team. This is a working supervisor position leading a team that helps maintain Seattle Parks & Recreation Facilities and works in conjunction with the One Seattle Interdepartmental Team on Graffiti Abatement. The Painter Crew Chief performs a wide variety of job duties which include supervising, planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning, and evaluating the work of painters involved in painting various facilities, structures, and equipment. Positions in this class require specialized knowledge of practices, methods, materials, and equipment utilized in painting and surface preparation, safety procedures, and supervisory ability.
The Painter Crew Chief position provides leadership to the Parks Department Paint Shop, including direct supervision of Senior Painters, Painters, and the Painter Apprentice. The Painter Crew Chief is responsible for collaborating with other trades shops within the department, and throughout the City of Seattle, as well with additional outside stakeholders to successfully accomplish department maintenance program goals within scope and budget. Reporting directly to the Facilities Maintenance Manager, this position recommends painting project priorities, develops processes, and establishes procedures to complement the program and improve operational efficiency. This position is represented by Painters District Council #5.
We are currently recruiting for one (1) regular, benefited position on the Day Shift between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., on a 4-day, 10-hour shift.
- Supervises, plans, organizes, schedules and assigns work to subordinate Painters.
- Inspects structures, facilities and equipment and determines painting needs in response to vandalism, scheduled maintenance and required maintenance; writes job orders for work to be performed.
- Estimates material and equipment requirements for jobs; orders materials and/or picks up specialty items and delivers to job sites.
- Interprets blueprints and sketch layouts to determine colors, quantity and quality of materials and time required to complete job.
- Inspects on-going and completed work of subordinates and contractors to ensure quality and performance standards.
- Coordinates job schedules with other trades.
- Maintains a variety of records concerning time and material, labor costs, job requests, trouble call requests, etc.
- Assists in annual budget preparation by preparing specifications, estimating personnel, material and equipment requirements, and projecting projects and schedules.
- Trains crews on new work procedures and methods, safety practices, toxic chemicals, rigging scaffolding, staging, surface preparation and protective coatings.
- Provides advisory services for Painter examinations and serves on interview panels.
- Assists crews in maintenance and repair activities as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a minimum of three years journey-level painter experience and the ability to supervise the work of others (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

License, Certification, and Other Requirements
- Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- Normal color vision is required.
Successful Candidates will demonstrate:
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.
- Completion of an accredited Painting Apprenticeship Program (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class)
- Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
- Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures.
- Exhibit a high level of proficiency in verbal communication to convey information effectively and professionally.
- Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.
- Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.
Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
- Work at heights on ladders or scaffolding.
- Frequently required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
- May work near heavy equipment.
- Required to work near energized equipment.
- May work in confined spaces.
- Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.

The full salary range for this position is $50.86 – $55.09 hourly.
