The Facilities Division places a very strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients and staff as well as helping to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.
We are seeking Plumbers to welcome into our dynamic team! SPR Plumbers perform journey-level plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair work on plumbing, heating, irrigation, gas and other related systems and components. Our division provides support for many facilities across the city, including 26 community centers, 8 indoor swimming pools, 2 outdoor (summer) swimming pools, 4 environmental education centers, 2 small craft centers, shelter houses, rental facilities and much more.
The work requires knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of the plumbing trade, and making decisions in selecting appropriate materials and methods of work. Most tasks are covered by standard guidelines, although judgment is needed to make appropriate selections of guidelines. Positions in this class are given general instructions on assignments and frequently work in different locations from their supervisors. The work includes personal contacts with vendors for purchasing materials and parts and with departmental staff for exchanging information. This position is represented by the Plumbers and Pipefitters, Local 32.
We are currently recruiting for multiple, benefited positions on a 4-day, 10-hour shift.
These positions will report to the Seattle Parks & Recreation Plumber Crew Chief.
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair drainage & irrigation systems, sewage disposal systems and other waste lines.
- Install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures and related components including flush valves, faucets, waterless urinal cartridges, sensor faucets, and sensor flush valves.
- Clear plumbing stoppages, repair fittings & valves, line breaks and leaks.
- Install, maintain, inspect, and repair piping systems inside and outside of buildings including potable and non-potable water, air, gas, drainage, sewage, fire, irrigation, chill water, steam, fountain, pools, and hydraulic heating piping systems. Install, repair, and replace all valves and piping system components.
- Install, maintain, test, repair, and winterize irrigation systems including sprinkler heads, valves, valve boxes, quick couplers, control clocks, piping, pressure reducing valves, and backflow devices.
- Install, maintain, and replace all equipment installed on piping systems including pumps, air compressors, heat exchanges, filters, chemical injection equipment, sewage ejectors, electronic valves, tempering valves, appliances, water coolers, spa equipment, pool equipment, fountain equipment, and water heaters.
- Install, repair, and perform required testing and certification of backflow assemblies. (A Backflow Assembly Tester certification is required to test assemblies.)
- Test fire systems and maintain test report files and electronic records. Install and maintain fire system and system components; repair and install piping and components; inspect system to ensure code compliance and make necessary corrections. (A Seattle Fire Sprinkler certification is required to perform this work.)
- Install cast iron sectional boilers. Repair and maintain all associated equipment such as thermostats, low water cutoffs, water feeders, pumps, heating valves of all types, relief vales, heating coils, boiler control sensing equipment, gas regulator, solenoid valves, etc. (Some work may require a Boiler License.)
- Install, maintain, and repair gas piping and gas equipment. Install and repair gas appliances including water heaters, pool heaters, spa heaters, stoves, dryers, area heaters, and boiler gas feed components. (A Gas Piping Mechanic License is required to perform this work.)
- Install, maintain, and replace equipment on water systems including mixing chemical solutions, drawing water samples, and other related duties.
- Clear plumbing stoppages and repairs fitting and line breaks and leaks.
- Cut and thread pipe and perform welding, soldering and brazing work for plumbing installation and maintenance tasks.
- Inspect plumbing installations for needed repairs, make recommendations or perform repairs and tests completed work.
- Plan installations and prepare cost estimates for anticipated plumbing installations.
- Install and maintain chemical injection and/or pool circulation systems.
- Review project plans to ensure conformity with applicable codes, specifications, and standards.
- Inspect plumbing installations and conduct required tests to ensure jobs are completed.
- Read blueprints and review project plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and standards.
- Cut and thread pipes.
- Dig trenches for irrigation systems.
- Perform soldering and brazing work for plumbing installation and maintenance repairs.
- Order necessary parts & supplies and maintain required records.
- Respond to emergency situations, make recommendations, and perform required repairs.
- Maintain job status updates through online work order system.
- Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a minimum of four years of experience working at the plumbing and pipe fitting trade under a qualified journey level supervisor or completion of an accepted plumber apprenticeship program (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background).
License, Certification, and Other Requirements
- Current Washington State Journeyman Plumber's license.
- A current, valid Washington State driver's license
- City of Seattle Gas Piping License (must be obtained within 12 months of hire)
You’ll be most successful in this position if you have:
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to use standard office software and work order/asset management systems for tasks such as record-keeping, reporting, and communication.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively prioritize and schedule maintenance tasks, aligning them with departmental needs.
- Experience in interacting with the public coupled with a high level of proficiency in customer service.
- Backflow Tester license.
- Highly motivated and a self-starter.
- Experience in the use of utility locating equipment.
- Be highly motivated and able to work as a team member in a demanding work environment, meeting tight deadlines.
- Be able to communicate facts and ideas clearly, both orally and in writing, to a variety of contractors, vendors, and department personnel.
- Experience maintaining multiple municipal or large commercial facilities.
- Competence in maintaining clear and comprehensive written records.
- Effective communication skills to coordinate maintenance activities, convey operational needs, concerns, and procedures.
Work Environment/Physical Demands/Other:
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend for extended periods and lift in excessive of 50 pounds.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors and in all inclement weather conditions.
- May be required to perform work over and in water on ladders scaffolds and lifts.
- Some locations may be performed in confined spaces and in cramped locations.
- May work at heights from ladders and scaffolds.
- May work near heavy equipment.
- May require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
- Dependent on business needs, candidates may be required to obtain a respirator clearance fit test.
- Current shift schedules are 4/10 (4 days a week – 10-hour days)
- May be required to work on-call (additional compensation is provided for this work)
- Depending on work, may be required to work varying shifts.
The full salary range for this position is $48.32 - $52.18 per hour.
