Position Description
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an undergraduate level intern for SPU's Safety Office. The successful intern will assist Safety professionals with writing plans for Lockout Tagout (LOTO) of energy sources and standard operating procedures (SOP) for various machinery used in the utility.
There is one (1) undergraduate level internship opportunity available. The projected start date for this internship is late May 2025. This internship is expected to last up to three (3) months.

The selected intern will work with Safety professionals performing a variety of duties, which include:
Qualifications
Education: Applicant must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate-level coursework pursuing a degree in Safety and Health, Mechatronic Engineering, or a closely related field.
Student must be enrolled at least part-time or full-time and maintain a 2.5 GPA for the duration of the internship.
Exception: Student does not need to be enrolled over the summer months but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter/Semester proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Fall session as applicable.
Licensing Requirement: A Washington State driver license is required for this internship in order to operate a City vehicle to conduct site visits.

This internship requires student to report to the office five (5) days per week.

- Develop technical writing skills
- Research General and Construction safety codes as needed
- Gain experience leading safety meetings
- Gain general understanding of electrical safety
- Familiarization with industrial machines and machine safety
Job Responsibilities
The selected intern will work with Safety professionals performing a variety of duties, which include:
- Develop operating LOTO and SOPs for all machine used in the machinist shop, carpenter’s shop, and materials laboratory and Solid Waste Compactors.
- Update our LOTO policy
- Assist with possible tool design for issues in the water and wastewater line of business
- Inspect LOTO used in water to develop proper locking devises and development of procedures in an SOP
- May perform other safety issues as assigned.
