Position Overview:
This position is a Sunset Position and has budget approval through 2026, with the option of an extension to 2028. The extension of the budget is based upon the Department's request to extend the position and the approval by the City Council to continue to fund the position.

In this dynamic role as a Sunset Traffic Control Plans Reviewer (officially known as Associate Civil Engineering Specialist), you'll be the guardian of safe passage for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians through construction work zones and special events within the City of Seattle right-of-way. Your daily mission? Ensuring that every traffic control plan aligns with the highest safety standards. This position reports to the Traffic Control and Special Events Supervisor.
- Reviews and approves traffic control plans.
- Provides clear, consistent, and constructive feedback to customers to resolve traffic control plan issues.
- Provides input on consistent policy development and implementation as part of the traffic control plan review team.
- Writes traffic control specifications for large capital projects.
- Negotiates as part of City team with contractors regarding scheduling; includes working collaboratively with inter-divisional, inter-departmental, and community stakeholder interests.
- Communicates with both internal and external customers in writing, by phone, or in person.
- Documents and file reviews, negotiation/issues correspondence, and issues resolution.
- Creates/develops traffic control plans.
- Works in a multicultural workplace and with diverse customers, emphasizing communication for cooperation, collaboration, and inclusiveness in support of department goals to promote diversity and social justice.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Requires two (2) years of Civil Engineering experience and an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two (2) years of college-level coursework in engineering or construction technology.
OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:
- Construction, roadway, and other offsite experience with traffic control set-ups.
- Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
- Excellent record-keeping/organization skills.
- Excellent customer service experience; demonstrated reliability.
- Flexibility and ability to prioritize needs in an environment with rapidly changing work conditions and priorities.
- Experience working for a governmental or other public-facing organization.
- Effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
- Other Requirements:
- Current Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility
- A background check may be required for this position.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
- Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 2 days of the work is completed in a city office, and 3 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
- Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
- May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods.

The full salary range for this position is $49.22 - $57.30 Hourly.
