The Engineering & Technology Operations Division of Seattle City Light is looking for a dynamic Wood Pole Design Engineer Supervisor (Electrical Power Systems Engineer, Principal) to join the Wood Pole Utility Design team. This is a working supervisor position which requires strong supervisory skills along with strong engineering skills. As the successful candidate, you will lead a group of engineers working on pole replacement work, assigning work as it comes into the group; offer direction and advice on projects within the group; approve work before it is issued to customers, crews, and contractors; and lead culture change and Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) principles.
  
In this role, you will also perform all supervisory functions, including conducting team and one-on-one meetings, and tracking and approving time for the group. You will be heavily involved in the training needs of this team, to include CAD, SCL Standards, NESC, IKE4, and SpidaStudio. You will also PE endorse applicable work packages. This position will report to the Joint Use Engineering & Wood Pole Design Team Manager.

Here is more about what you’ll be doing: 

  • Supervises or serves as project engineer/coordinator on projects related to wooden pole replacement.
  • Uses PE credentials to endorse work package designs prior to construction.
  • Trains assigned engineers in current or future technology to comply with work practices and procedures, ensuring NESC and standards compliance
  • Supervises highly complex detail design work for equipment installation, station construction or facility projects.
  • Supervises the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans, estimates, budgets, material requirements, detail final plans, specifications, work orders and instructions, customer instructions and schedules, operating and maintenance instructions, special conditions, and agreements. 
  • Provides instructions to field crews and answers questions concerning design issues, and monitors progress of construction projects
  • Supervises the coordination and review of work submitted by consultants and manufacturers. 
  • Participates in the selection, hiring, and performance appraisal of subordinates and performs other personnel/administrative tasks. 
  • Supervises the survey of sites, determination of design needs or problems and location of equipment. 
  • Makes presentations and acts as team leader on special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: 

This class requires a total of eight years experience: Six years professional electrical power systems engineering experience equivalent to the Electrical Power Systems Engineer level. An additional two years supervisory, lead or project management experience is required to be a supervising Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer. A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is also required. A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous or toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites. Work in underground utility facilities will require climbing ladders. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, or holidays. Overnight travel may be required.

License, Certification and Other Requirements:

Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Professional Engineer state licensure within the United States and up to 12 months after appointment to attain State of Washington registration.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Three or more years of lead or supervisory experience
  • Experience working with Distribution or Joint Use engineering.
  • Experience with current pole engineering practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of and direct experience with CAD, NESC, SCL Standards, IKE4, and SpidaCalc/Studio. 
  • Exemplary interpersonal, technical writing and oral communications skills.
  • Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively, and independently.

The full salary range for this position is $81.84 to $96.09 per hour.
