Maintenance Worker I (Parks)

Under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director or designee, this position is responsible for performing a wide variety of skilled and/or semiskilled maintenance and repair work in one or more trade disciplines.

Authorization for Background Check
  • Performs skilled maintenance and repairs on structures, facilities, equipment, and other City owned property in a variety of trade disciplines.
  • Performs daily trash and debris pickup and the removal of hazardous items from park areas.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment
  • and tools after use.
  • Performs routine inspections on assigned equipment and reports defects or needed repairs to their immediate supervisor.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a work crew. This includes pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning and laying asphalt. 
  • Performs mowing, understanding and repairing irrigation systems, using small landscaping tools to maintain City owned property. 
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department.
  • Operates a variety of light and medium-sized power construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Ensures all work performed adheres to established safety standards, building codes and regulations, and engineering standards where applicable.
  • Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules or when directed.
  • Inspects, recognizes, and reports any detected deterioration, repair needs, and maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • May work in a variety of confined or enclosed spaces.
  • May assist Roads Department with street inspections and/or repairs to ensure that all aspects of the roadways are functioning properly.

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Emergency Declaration Status:
Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency.  On an incident-by-incident basis, the employee’s department head will make the determination as to who will be required to work. Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year of experience in related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  
Special Qualifications:
  • Possession of a valid, State of Florida Commercial Class B driver’s license with air brake endorsement to operate a motor vehicle. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment; however, if CDL Class B requirement is not met, license must be obtained within 6 months.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Experience with operating small equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saw, lawn mowers.
  • Must have basic knowledge of hand tools.
  • Knowledge of the functions of pertinent maintenance equipment function.
  • Knowledge of types of materials methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities.
  • Knowledge of pertinent safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
  • Ability to use motorized vehicles and equipment, including an excavator, dozer, grader, tractor, truck, lowboy trailer and roller, dump truck, pickup truck, tamper, backhoe, various saws, compressor, sanders, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, and/or telephone.
  • Ability to use instruments to establish grade, laser, and builder level.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, city personnel, and other public or outside agencies.  
  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks in an efficient manner.  
  • Ability to complete assignments accurately and on a timely basis.  
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and accurately in emergency situations in accordance with departmental rules and regulations.   
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to work independently with multiple assignments.

Requires the ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words.   Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) Must be able to communicate via a telephone. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.  Maintain all appropriate records as instructed.   
Functional Reasoning:  Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement. 
Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently using the English language. 
ADA COMPLIANCE
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: 
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Standing or Sitting: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Visual Acuity: Including color, depth perception, and field vision.
