The City of Sebastopol is seeking an individual who has a passion for planning, has outstanding communication skills, and enjoys providing excellent customer service. The Permit Technician performs a variety of routine to complex administrative and technical duties related to the issuance of permits and in support of related services and activities of the Community Development Department. The selected candidate will explain ordinances, requirements, and City codes and department procedures to architects, engineers, builders, homeowners, and the general public pertaining to land development and improvement, permit requests, and concerns. The Permit Technician receives work direction and training from the planners, building officials, inspectors, or engineering professionals; and performs related technical and administrative work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will:
- Possess exceptional communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Possess a strong work ethic and the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with members of the public, City staff, representatives from other agencies, contractors, and architects.
- Possess knowledge of basic principles, practices, and procedures related to city and regional planning, land development, zoning ordinances, site planning, encroachment, grading, and architectural design.
- Possess municipal permitting processes, methods, and techniques of permitting review practices, permit filing, and approval procedures.
- Have knowledge of basic permit practices, including construction drawings and blueprints, construction types, and occupancies.
- Be able to interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Completion of additional education past high school, equivalent to a two-year associate degree program in construction technology, building inspection, civil engineering, or a related field, can be substituted for years of experience.
Experience: Two (2) years of administrative support or customer service experience, including working directly with members of the general public. Experience reviewing basic planning, zoning, and engineering code and permit insurance requirements in a public agency setting is highly desirable.
License and Certifications: This position may require the use of a vehicle while conducting City business. In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicle safely and possess a valid, Class C, California driver's license OR be able to demonstrate the ability to travel on scheduled or unscheduled visits to various locations in the City which may or may not be reachable by public transportation.

- Long-term and Short-term Disability Ins. - 60% of salary for employee. Benefit is non- taxable income.
- PERS Pension Plan: 2% @ 62 for PEPRA Members (hired after 01/01/13) or 2% @ 55 for Classic Members (transferred from another agency within 6 months). Uniform Allowance is not PERS able income for PEPRA members.
