Job Summary:

Sedalia Animal Shelter is a medium sized open-admission shelter with an annual intake of about 1,100 animals and a live release rate exceeding 90%. Our certified animal care providers and animal control work together as a team to provide the best care possible for our shelter pets. The staff veterinarian will provide direction to the shelter staff for the treatment of stray hold animals. After stray holds are up staff veterinarian will sterilize the animals and perform any other necessary treatments to the animal, as well as sterilize the animals for other rescues and shelters. Staff veterinarian will have the assistance of a registered veterinary technician. Staff Veterinarian will report to the Shelter Manger, direct the registered veterinary technician and form treatment plans for shelter staff to carry out. The only on-call responsibilities would be the Sedalia Animal Shelter, which historically utilize these services 4-6 times per year.

Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday through Friday with very limited emergency calls (average of 4-6 per year). Holidays and weekends off. Limited exposure to the public. The City offers a robust benefits package to include,

Job Scope:

The purpose of this position is to oversee and provide direction to the shelter staff for the treatment of stray hold animals. After stray holds are up staff veterinarian will sterilize the animals and perform any other necessary treatments to the animal, as well as sterilize the animals of other rescues and shelters. Successful performance helps ensure animal and citizen safety and welfare.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Perform high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgeries.

2. Perform additional surgeries as needed, e.g. FHO, amputations, enucleations, etc.

3. Triage and provide care to emergent patients that arrive as strays.

4. Monitor the daily health of shelter animals.

5. Examine and provide treatment plans as needed for shelter animals.

6. Provide direction to medical and shelter staff.

7. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must hold a current Missouri Veterinary License or must be qualified and able to obtain such license prior to start date.

2. Must be qualified & eligible for all license requirements including DEA, BNDD, etc.

3. Must be able to demonstrate effective decision making and diagnostic skills.

4. Experience in the field of veterinary medicine or large animal practice preferred but not required.

5. High Volume surgical sterilization experience desirable.

6. Surgical and case management experience desirable.

7. Minimum of 2 years of supervision experience preferred.

8. Valid driver’s license.

9. Must agree to be subject to random drug screen throughout employment.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of disease recognition.

2. Effective decision making and diagnostic skills.

3. Interest in pursuing treatment options.

4. Able to handle multiple tasks at once.

5. Able to deal with staff and volunteers in a professional manner.

6. Able to direct work of others and train/develop employees.

7. Maintain thorough high quality medical records, documenting all exam findings, test results, and treatments.

8. Must be able to handle and navigate the emotional aspects and stresses of animal welfare.

9. Knowledge of city ordinances and department policies and procedures.

10. Knowledge of animal behavior.

11. Knowledge of quarantine procedures.

12. Knowledge of Animal Shelter operation and applicable state laws is preferred.

13. Skill in budgeting, inventory management, and supervision.

14. Skill in operating a computer and standard office equipment.

15. Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those

connected with the course of work.

16. Skill in oral and written communication.

17. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with members of the public and the media.

Complexity:

The work consists of related duties connected to veterinarian work. The number of surgeries completed, and animals seen contribute to the complexity of the work.

Principal Working Relationships:

1. Co-workers, political officials, and other city employees.

2. Court personnel, veterinarians, postal carriers, utility workers, and the general public.

Purpose of Contacts:

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, resolve problems, motivate or influence persons, and clarify, justify, defend, negotiate, or settle matters.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

This position will have Supervisory responsibilities.

The employee may occasionally be required to physically control animals and must maintain a level of physical ability accordingly.

Work is performed in an animal shelter with shared office space. Work hours are typically 8-5 Monday through Friday with very limited emergency calls (average of 4-6 per year). Holidays and weekends are off. Limited exposure to the public. Potential for exposure to diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics and sharp objects. Field conditions may be encountered.

The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects typically not to exceed 50 pounds with or without assistance and may be required to distinguish between shades of color.

Work Environment:

The work is typically performed in an office. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather when in the field. The work will require the use of protective devices.
