Overview
Front-line supervisor responsible for planning, scheduling and oversight of assigned tasks and projects. Supervises and directly performs a wide range of maintenance, repair and construction tasks to ensure proper operation and safe utilization of the City’s parks and public grounds, including the safe and proper maintenance of city parks, trails, landscaped and streetscaped areas, recreation facilities and fields, and related structures and equipment. Work involves directing, coordinating, supervising, after hours call-in duty, and formally evaluating the work of others in a full supervisory capacity.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Plans, schedules, assigns, and supervises maintenance of City parks, public grounds, and streetscape and landscape areas.
- Ensures that assigned crew complies with established safety regulations, procedures, and practices.
- Coordinates and delivers parks tasks and projects as assigned. Plans and schedules work. Calculates quantities and orders supplies, updates and maintains records, and provides work direction and on-site instruction to fellow employees. Contributes to the effective and timely communication of questions, concerns, and ideas.
- After hour call-in duty, requires a foreperson to be on-call after normal working hours and weekends for one-week intervals, this is on rotating schedule between forepersons.
- Maintains and improves City parks and public grounds, including construction, repair, remodel and maintenance of park buildings and picnic shelters, including general carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and electrical work; construction, inspection and repair playground equipment; assembles, repairs, paints and installs benches, tables, and grills; maintains and repairs driveways, parking lots, trails and walkways; maintains athletic fields by grading, dragging, grooming, lining, and aerating; maintains backstops, goal posts, lighting and fencing; prepares and maintains outdoor ice rinks; empties garbage cans, maintains and repairs irrigation systems. Constructs, installs and maintains signs.
- Operates and responsible for the proper use, care, and storage of a wide range of light and heavy equipment including trucks, plows, loaders, graders, skidsteers, tractors, mowers, chain saws and other hand tools and power equipment. Communicates any corresponding maintenance issues and assists with repairs as directed or requested.
- Plows snow and applies de-icing materials to City streets, alleys, parking lots and trails as assigned and necessitated by weather conditions, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Mow grass, trim grass, apply herbicide or fertilizer, sod, or seed to establish new turf or repair damaged patches. Plants, monitors, trims, and removes City trees. Performs general landscape maintenance.
- Responsible for the proper use, care and storage of vehicles, tools and equipment. Ensures maintenance and repair issues are addressed in a thorough and timely manner. Purchases new or replacement tools, equipment and parts as directed.
- Investigates and responds to citizen questions, complaints and requests for service as assigned. Takes appropriate action in accordance with Department and City policies
- Utilizes and updates ArcGIS/asset management system and reports changes or problems to the GIS specialists.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent and at least four years of experience in a municipal public works setting or similar environment. Must possess, and maintain, a valid Class B driver’s license with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Must possess APWA Public Works Certificate (or similar equivalency) or obtain within three years of hire.
Desired Qualifications
- Supervisory experience. Specialized certifications in pesticide application, forklift operation, playground and tree inspection, or other applicable fields. Class A driver’s license. Fluency in a second language, in addition to English, that has a recognized presence in the community (Spanish, Russian, Hmong, etc.)
