Performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, equipment operation, and construction tasks to ensure proper operation and safe utilization of the city's street, park, public grounds, and sewer systems.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Heavy Equipment Operator: Operates wide range of large equipment including loaders, backhoes, graders, bucket trucks, Class 8 trucks with plows, street sweepers, jetting trucks, tractors, mowers, skid steers and other power equipment. Street Maintenance: Plowing, de-icing, snow removal, pavement repair, curb and sidewalk repair, installing ADA pedestrian ramps, grading, street sweeping, striping of roadways and parking lots. Pours, maintains and repairs driveways, parking lots and trails. Performs maintenance on roadsides, ditches, storm water ponds and drainage ways by mowing and removing sediment. Park Maintenance: Maintains athletic fields by applying herbicide and fertilizer, laying out, striping, grading, grooming, aerating, top dressing and mowing. Maintains fencing, backstops, goals and lighting. Installs, maintains, repairs, winterizes and starts-up irrigation systems to athletic fields and public grounds. Constructs, inspects, and repairs playground equipment and orders parts as needed. Constructs, floods and maintains outdoor ice rinks. Sanitary Sewer: Responds to sewer back-ups and lift station alarms as assigned. Performs construction and maintenance on sanitary sewers, including lift stations, air release valves, manholes and sanitary sewer mains by reconstructing, jetting, flushing and televising. Storm Sewer: Reconstructs and repairs catch basins. Carries out emergency response duties in case of storms and floods; including the removal of debris and clearing of streets and property, sandbagging, jetting pipes and pumping of facilities. Building Maintenance: Constructs, repairs, remodels and maintains park buildings and picnic shelters including framing, roofing, pouring concrete, mechanical, plumbing and minor electrical issues to make buildings ADA compliant. Designs and fabricates projects out of metal and wood using welder, plasma cutter, grinder, sander, table saw, miter saw, pneumatic nailer and measuring tape. Equipment Maintenance: Installs and removes sanders, wings and plows on trucks. Performs general maintenance on small equipment including concrete saws, compactors, chain saws, leaf blowers, mowers, string trimmers, chemical sprayers and paint sprayers. Tree Maintenance: Identifies, trims, removes and replaces trees in public right-of-ways, easements and City parks.

Ability to safely and effectively operate a wide range of vehicles, equipment and tools necessary for maintenance tasks. Ability to communicate ideas and explanations clearly in English. Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors. Ability to comprehend and communicate the policies, practices and services of the Public Works Division and to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the public in a tactful and courteous manner. Ability to learn and fully utilize Department's asset management software for reporting and record keeping, as well as web-based email and timesheet systems. Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide and apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability to read and interpret technical instructions, operating manuals and safety guidelines. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
