What are the responsibilities and job description for the Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern position at City of Sheboygan?
The City of Sheboygan is looking for a GIS Intern to join our engineering team at the Department of Public Works. In this position, the intern will work on-site to assist the GIS Coordinator in managing, updating, and maintaining the Enterprise Geodatabase, editing existing spatial data, and developing new spatial datasets. This position will require collaboration and cooperation among different user groups and GIS skill levels. Your technical proficiency, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills will play a key role in the success of the City’s geospatial initiatives.
This is a seasonal, 40 hours/week position. The anticipated schedule for this position is 7:30am - 4:00pm Monday-Friday. Interns are not eligible for benefits.

- Assist in the organization, collection, and attribute entry for geospatial data in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Portal, and Filed Maps.
- Collaborate with the GIS Coordinator to create maps for various projects.
- Georeference paper records with high accuracy and precision for easy digital access.
- Collect and analyze spatial data using ArcGIS Field Maps, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.

- Develop proficiency using ArcGIS Pro software
- Gain knowledge of ArcGIS Enterprise administration
- Learn about the managing of a municipal GIS
- Expand knowledge of ESRI products (Filed Maps, Survey123, ArcGIS Portal)

- Assists in GIS data development, data conversion, data maintenance, GPS data collection, spatial analysis, web map creation, and cartographic map production.
- Assists with asset inventory by compiling related documents and editing attribute information.
- Assists with field collection projects utilizing Field Maps.
- Enters and updates data and layer for publicly available and internal datasets.
- Works with GIS Coordinator to gain experience with Enterprise geodatabase management, server maintenance, complying with data standards, and updating existing databases.
- Takes advantage of learning opportunities to enhance GIS skills and knowledge.
- Supports internal engineering and management team related to special projects.
- Scans and catalogues paper records.
- Current enrollment in an Associate's, Bachelor's , or Master's degree program for Geography, Cartography, GIS, or other related field required.
- Introductory knowledge of geographic information systems, cartographic principles, and ESRI technology required
- Understanding of ESRI ArcGIS software (Pro, Online) and field applications (Field Maps, Survey123).
- Willingness to learn and apply GIS concepts to practical scenarios.
- Interest in working with geospatial data, including data quality assurance, analysis, and interpretation.
- Meticulous attention to detail in data entry and map creation.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively communicate technology concepts to non-technical peers.
