The Department of Public Works is responsible for providing quality infrastructure that conveys safe, efficient delivery of essential goods and services, providing clean and beautiful public spaces that maximize the natural environment to enhance the overall quality of life and delivers professional quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Seasonal Maintenance Workers perform a variety of tasks and labor work as assigned by division supervisors within the City of Sheboygan’s Public Works Department. Seasonal staff are employed from spring to fall working up to 40 hours per week in the areas of Parks, Forestry, Traffic and Cemetery. The normal hours of work are 7:00am to 3:00pm, Monday – Friday. Weekend hours may also be available.
College students are encouraged to apply or call before your spring break to set up an interview. Retirees are encouraged to apply. Workdays and hours may be adjusted for some positions.
Offers of employment are contingent upon successfully passing a drug screening and background check.1. Cleans and maintains public grounds and equipment, including pickup of litter and trash, shoveling soil and gravel, raking leaves and debris, sweeping surfaces, and moving equipment.
2. Cleans and maintains public buildings, including mopping floors, cleaning bathroom fixtures, and washing windows.
3. Assists with traffic control functions, including set-up and removal of barricades and cones and street line painting
4. Cuts grass, weeds, and brush using power and hand tools.
5. Collects garbage, refuse, and trash.
6. Completes other duties as assigned.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must possess a valid driver’s license with proper auto insurance per state of Wisconsin law.
Must possess the strength and stamina to physically labor outdoors under various weather conditions.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively.
Must have ability to act, make decisions, and justify action based on rational thought, good judgment, and logical thought.
Awareness of occupational hazards, environmental regulations and safe work practice.
Work Environment:
Above average physical strength and stamina are required while performing the duties of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, and handle materials which may range up to 50 pounds for limited periods. This work requires lifting, standing, walking and reaching for long sustained periods.The employee frequently is required to work outdoors in all climatic conditions and will experience some exposure to definitely disagreeable features requiring the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
