What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic - Garage position at City of Shelby, NC?
This position performs work maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment, troubleshooting problems, and maintaining related records and files. Other duties include: inspecting and diagnosing problems and servicing automobiles, trucks, and other equipment; servicing, maintaining, and performing preventive maintenance on automobiles and trucks; installing water pumps, radiators, batteries, brakes, and other equipment; lubricating equipment, changing oil, replacing filters; checking brakes, antifreeze, fluid levels, battery, etc.; performing tire work on light duty cars and trucks and heavy equipment; performing minor body repairs; painting equipment; performing metal fabrication and welding tasks; rebuilding engines, motors, differentials, and hydraulic assemblies; repairing front ends and drive trains; performing tune-ups on cars, tractors, trucks, mowers, weed eaters, replacing hydraulic lines and fittings; diagnosing wiring and sensor problems; training and assisting other staff with more complicated repairs and maintenance work.
Hours: Monday-Friday; first shift.
To Compete in the Selection Process: High school diploma/GED and minimal experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience. General knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery; mechanical aptitude; skill in the use of personal computers. Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts; and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Special requirements: NC Automobile Inspector certification upon hire. Valid NC commercial driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
