Part time firefighters must perform general firefighting work in combating and extinguishing fires when called upon for help by the Shelbyville Fire Department. Personnel in this class are responsible for the protection of life and property through firefighting activities performed under supervision of the on-duty commanding officer. Work is performed under close supervision in accordance with well-defined procedures, and assignments are received from Department Superiors both in firefighting and maintenance duties.
This is a part-time position with a pay range of $12.50-$15.90/hour, depending on experience and/or certifications.
Employee will operate firefighting, rescue equipment including nozzles, hoses, self-contained breathing apparatus, power saws, generators, jaws, hydraulic tools, ladders, and various hand tools. The employee must perform firefighting and emergency operations during all kinds of adverse weather and physical conditions. Employees are exposed to extreme heat, smoke, hazardous chemicals, and falling materials, blood, and other dangerous and life-threating conditions. Firefighters perform other duties in areas such as hazardous materials incidents, rescues, searches, and other public safety or community service functions.

· Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools and equipment which includes a motor vehicle, computer, generator, fire pump, fire hydrant, axe, shovel, hydraulic tools, power tools, hand tools, medical equipment, etc.
· Must be able to use body to work, move or carry objects or materials.
· Firefighters shall perform duties requiring bending, crouching, stooping, climbing, and crawling in buildings.
· Must be able to wear heavy protective clothing for extended periods of time.
· Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently.
· Must be able to identify colors and to read placards and street signs or to see and respond to imminently hazardous situations in less than standard visual lighting conditions.
· Operate in environment of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, aboveground heights, and in closed or confined spaces.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Firefighters shall respond when called to fire alarms with a company, connect hose, operate nozzle, and direct water streams.
2. Firefighters shall force entry of premises for firefighting, rescue and salvage operation, use chemical fire extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment.
3. Firefighters shall remove persons from danger and administer first-aid to injured persons.
4. Firefighters shall position and climb ladders to gain access to upper level of buildings.
5. Firefighters shall perform salvage operations such as throwing covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
6. Firefighters may be required to carry a charged hose line into a structure fire for extinguishment.
7. Firefighters shall be required to wear a complete set of protective clothing and may also be required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
8. Firefighters shall perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme exertion under such handicaps as smoke and cramped surroundings.
9. Firefighters shall participate in Fire Department training classes in firefighting, first-aid and related subjects.
10. Firefighters shall perform general clean-up work of fire equipment after responding to an alarm, including reloading and cleaning of hose.
11. Firefighters must know the street system and physical layout of Shelbyville.
12. Firefighters shall operate fire apparatus when properly certified to do so.
13. Firefighters may operate departmental radio communications on special assignments, receive alarms, and notify appropriate personnel
14. Firefighters shall participate in annual hose tests and annual service tests of engines.
15. Firefighters shall participate in flow testing fire hydrants.
16. Firefighters will be required to attend and complete the 64-hr. fire fighter class along with live burn class before they can be allowed to start working on any shifts for compensation pay from the city of Shelbyville Fire Department.
17. Firefighters will be required to attend and complete the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course and have there EMR certification within the first two years of employment
18. Must have means of transportation to answer alarms and a telephone listed for answering of alarms.
19. Firefighters shall attend classes at the State Fire and Codes Academy to increase their knowledge and abilities in the performance of their duties.
· Have the ability to read, understand, and act upon printed information.
· Knowledge of fire prevention and State and City regulations as applied to firefighting and prevention.
· Knowledge of geographic area of the City.
· Knowledge of general first-aid.
· Knowledge of firefighting equipment and its intended uses.
· Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency situation and to determine the proper course of action.
· Ability to learn to operate a variety of firefighting equipment.
· Ability to learn to operate a large truck safely.
· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
· Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
· Must have high school diploma or successfully completed GED test.
· Must possess, and maintain, a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee.
· Must take and successfully pass a physical abilities test, and a written exam in order to be considered for this position.
· Must pass a background check, pre-employment physical examination and drug test.
· Must pass a physical ability test administered by the Department on an annual basis.
