GENERAL SUMMARY

DEFINITION
This is an extra help 40-hour per week position. The work schedule is typically Monday through Friday with an occasional evening or weekend assignment. Wastewater extra help may work up to six months (1040 hours) during the wastewater grounds and high frequency maintenance periods between April and September.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Public Works Maintenance Wastewater Extra Help is a stand-alone position. Positions in this class are temporary and perform a variety of semi-skilled infrastructure maintenance and repair tasks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from the Wastewater Manager, Senior Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker, or other full time maintenance staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:
  • Use light and heavy equipment, hand and power tools, and light and heavy vehicles to perform landscape maintenance, pump maintenance, manhole rehabilitation and various other wastewater tasks/repairs.
  • Perform maintenance tasks associated with lift station maintenance, and vegetation control including line trimming, mowing, edging, pruning, hedge trimming, leaf blowing, litter control, and debris removal at wastewater lift stations, Linden maintenance facility and various other wastewater facilities.
  • Assist with manhole repair, and masonry maintenance work including raising of iron, patching, and sealing manhole structures.
  • Assist with inspection activities, maintenance and repair activities on various wastewater infrastructure including grinder pumps, lift station and vehicle preventative maintenance.
  • Perform traffic control activities (flagging, work zone set up and tear down) under direction and in support of wastewater activities.
  • Operate City vehicles in a proper and safe manner to transport personnel, materials, and miscellaneous equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • General principles of facility and infrastructure maintenance including asphalt, concrete, wastewater repairs and vegetation control.
  • Safe and proper usage of hand tools and light power tools
  • Laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles and safe driving practices
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions
Ability to:
  • Participate and work effectively in an organization committed to advancing principles and practices of equity and anti-racism.
  • Operate light duty vehicles and battery, electric, or fuel powered equipment.
  • Utilize hand and power tools used in performance of duties.
  • Perform semi-skilled tasks without close supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.
  • Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions
  • Perform physical labor in all weather conditions.
  • Observe defensive driving practices.
  • Positively and effectively interact with diverse individuals to accomplish a common goal.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
One year of public works maintenance or equivalent outdoor construction work experience.

Education/Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid state-issued Driver's License.
Valid Washington State flagger/traffic control certification desired or ability to obtain.

Employment is contingent upon successfully passing State/Federal pre-employment background checks.

  • All positions require the completion of reference checks, including at least one prior supervisor.
  • This position requires completion of a criminal background check prior to the start of employment.
  • This position requires a valid state-issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record that must be provided prior to the start of employment.


Environmental Conditions
:
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease; potentially hazardous chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
