What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician / Senior Engineering Technician position at City of Shoreview?
The City of Shoreview is accepting applications to fill a single vacant position in our Public Works Department. This position will be filled with either a Senior Engineering Technician or Engineering Technician depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected applicant.
This position will work closely with the engineering staff on design and construction observation of public works projects to include street, traffic, water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater infrastructure projects. As a key member of the Public Works Department, this position works closely with engineers, maintenance staff and contractors to deliver high-quality projects for the city’s residents. Strong candidates will have excellent problem solving and communication skills.
Engineering Technician Duties:- Assists with capital improvement projects including design, quantity calculation, shop drawing review, and construction observation
- Reads and drafts plans and details using AutoCAD and ESRI software
- Assists with reviewing project specifications for compliance with city standards, constructability and industry best practices
- Construction management including documentation, shop drawing review, tracking quantities and construction observation
- Communicates technical information with contractors and city maintenance staff
- Responds to basic resident questions about construction projects
- Assists with maintaining records, files and reports
- Assists with updating GIS databases
- Assists with capital improvement projects including planning, design, quantity calculation, shop drawing review and construction observation
- Reads and drafts plans and updates standard details using AutoCAD and ESRI software
- Reviews project specifications for compliance with city standards, constructability and industry best practices
- Construction management including documentation, shop drawing review, tracking quantities and construction observation
- Communicates technical information with stakeholders: contractors, maintenance staff, other agency staff and residents
- Responds to complex resident questions and concerns about construction projects. Able to communicate technical information and apply city policies to the issue
- Prepares and maintains records, files and reports as required
- Maintains, adds and modifies GIS databases

Engineering Technician - Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate degree or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
- 2 years related work experience
- 1 year of recent full-time work experience with AutoCAD
- MnDOT materials certifications (or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire)
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory motor vehicle report
- 3 years of work experience in street and utility construction
- 1 year of work experience in construction surveying and staking
- 1 year of work experience in construction administration on MN State Aid projects
- Construction SWPPP design or inspection certificate
- Additional, recent work experience with AutoCAD
- Skills in ArcGIS Online/Pro, ArcMap or other ESRI software
- Associate degree or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
- 5 years related work experience
- 2 years of recent full-time work experience with AutoCAD

Hiring Wage Ranges:
Engineering Technician: $33.30 - $36.71 per hour depending on experience, plus excellent benefits
Senior Engineering Technician: $40.79 - $44.97 per hour depending on experience, plus excellent benefits

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
