Class Title

The Mechanic, Automotive performs general tasks in the automotive shop on small, automotive, and diesel engines.

Duties

  • Under supervision, uses hand tools, timing devices and specialized electronic equipment to maintain and repair automotive vehicles and other operating equipment.
  • Performs general automotive repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Analyzes and determines cause of malfunctions to automotive and/or vehicles, light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  • Repairs, removes, replaces and installs ignition systems, lights, instrument panels, brakes, radios, heaters, mirrors, windshield wipers and other components, parts and units.
  • Receives work orders and selects appropriate tools and material.
  • May require test driving vehicles after repair completion.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid operator's license.
  • At least 2 years in progressively responsible automotive repair experience or

graduation from an accredited two (2) year technical program in automotive repair.

  • Ability to use independent judgment in planning sequence of operations in selecting proper tools and materials: ability to attain prescribed qualitative standards.
  • Manual-hand-finger dexterity and eye-hand-foot coordination.

Work Environment

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock or vibrations.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Physical Demands

  • Employee is frequently required to walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to stand; sit; climb or balance; stoop; kneel crouch; or crawl; and talk; or hear.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Requires specific vision abilities including close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Travel

Some local travel will be required to accomplish job assignments and visit job sites.
