JOB
The Refuse Collector is responsible for the collection of backdoor and curbside solid waste from residential and commercial establishments.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
1. In addition to curbside and back door waste collection, may also perform collection of litter along edges of streets and roadways, cutting grass and weeds and removal of waste from refuse vehicles.2. Works outside more than 75% of the time performing elemental heavy work on occasion very heavy work, concerning refuse collection and disposal.3. Rides Refuse Collection Vehicle to and from work sites.4. On site, walks at fast pace to and from refuse pickup points; lifts, carries, and dumps filled City container into vehicle.5. Lifts, carries and dumps trash left at curbs; dead and broken tree branches and limbs; cut grass and raked leaves; dead animals; and other refuse, trash and litter.6. Helps remove contents of vehicle at Incinerator plant or designated Landfill.7. Helps clean and service refuse collection vehicles.8. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Physical Requirements. 1. Frequently stand and walk; walk for long distances and on sloped round and slippery and uneven surfaces2. Normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; finger dexterity and arm-hand steadiness to use a variety of hand and power tools and operate equipment; ability to use feet to operate control pedals on equipment.3. Must be able to reach and lift arms above the shoulder; ability to lift material weighing over 100 lbs. with assistance; ability to ben, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch.4. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication5. Ability to wear safety and protective clothing such as hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs, respirators, gloves, boots, and chemical resistant clothing.6. Use of heavy power-driven maintenance equipment, such as tracked hydraulic excavator, backhoes, graders, and front end loaders, as well as hand tools, chain saws, grinders, drill presses, and jackhammers.Work Environment. 1. Work is performed outside in varying temperatures, weather, and humidity conditions; some work is performed alone and in remote locations;2. Work is performed in an environment with constant noise; exposure to gases, solvents, fumes, dust, grease and oils; exposure to moving equipment, electrical current, biting insects, and poison oak; may be exposed to hazards associated with underground excavations.3. Work hours may be irregular due to seasonal conditions.4. Constant contact with staff and the public.
