What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER I/II ELIGIBILITY LIST position at City of Sierra Vista?
Under general supervision, maintains public safety by enforcing City and county ordinances, state statutes, codes and regulations concerning the care, condition, control, use, treatment, rabies vaccination, licensing, and impounding of animals. Provides assistance and advocacy to animals in need.
FLSA status: Non-Exempt.
1. Responds to and investigates complaints from citizens concerning injured, sick, stray or abandoned animals, animal bites, nuisance animals, vicious animals, animal attacks and some wildlife concerns. Routinely patrols designated areas enforcing local animal laws and ordinances.
2. Apprehends and confines stray, injured, and nuisance domestic animals in the most safe, humane and approved manner possible. Administers emergency first aid to animals when necessary. Transports animals to sheltering facility. Prepares animals for rabies testing. Gathers and disposes of dead animals.
3. Arbitrates disputes if possible. Interviews witnesses and victims. Issues warnings and citations when necessary. Appears for scheduled court dates and testifies regarding civil infractions, custody hearings and cruelty charges. Coordinates efforts with other community professionals such as police officers, court officials, veterinarians and other shelter advocates.
4. Prepares written investigative reports that may be introduced as legal court documents.
5. Cleans and maintains kennels when assigned. Cares for and vaccinates impounded animals. Evaluates impounded animal's general health and behavior. Maintains impounded animals' inventory and records. Supervise department of corrections inmates.
6. Euthanizes.
7. Conducts classes, tours and presentations to educate the public regarding responsible pet ownership, rabies awareness, licensing, animal laws and ordinances.
8. Answers phones, dispatches calls to fellow animal control officers, and provides customer service. Assist the public with adopting animals, issues licenses and collects fees and donations.
9. Transports animals to the veterinarian.
10. Will be on standby on a rotational basis. Work weekends and holidays.
Knowledge of:
City and county ordinances, state statutes, and state health regulations concerning animal control.
Court procedures and rules of evidence.
Division policy and procedure on animal control and health procedures relative to rabies.

ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER I:
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED required. Classes in animal handling, bite prevention and pet care highly desirable.
Arizona driver's license and clean driving record.
Ability to obtain Euthanasia Technician certificate within six months of employment. Applicant must not have experimented with illegal substances within two (2) years of application. Employment contingent upon passing medical screening.
Animal Control exam Passing score 70%.
ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER II:
Qualifications:- Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona.
- Candidates must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor criminal offense involving moral turpitude in Arizona, nor in any state or federal jurisdiction, where the commission of such a criminal offense would be a misdemeanor as defined by the Arizona Revised Statutes.
- Candidates must not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
- Candidates must not have:
- used marijuana within the past two (2) years, all forms of marijuana, including THC extracts, cannabis, hashish, marijuana extracts, and marijuana edibles, and all forms of use will be treated the same.
- sold, produced, cultivated, or transported marijuana for sale.
- Candidates must not have:
- used drugs other than marijuana within the past seven (7) years,
- used such drugs other than for experimentation; the use of drugs is presumed to be greater than experimentation if the use exceeds five (5) times total, or exceeds one (1) time since the age of 21 years,
- sold, produced, cultivated or transported for sale any such drugs.
- Candidates must not have a pattern of abuse of prescription drugs.
