DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an entry/journey level class in the Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents assigned to this class initially perform routine and related duties under close supervision. However, as experience is acquired, they are expected to work independently exercising good judgment and initiative. Positions in this class are distinguished from those in the Senior Maintenance Worker class in that they do not frequently perform the most complex and difficult field maintenance duties, provide constant lead supervision to other field maintenance personnel, nor frequently operate heavy equipment in the most difficult and responsible work situations.
Street Maintenance
- Operate heavy construction equipment such as trucks, tractors, forklifts, and skip loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, curbs, sidewalks alleys and gutters.
- Patrol assigned area to locate potholes; spread asphalt in patching and repairing streets.
- Use concrete cutting and breaking equipment, operate a jackhammer, pour and finish concrete, and construct concrete forms; perform heavy manual labor and/or rough carpentry work.
- Set up temporary traffic control devices such as cones, signs and barricades as necessary.
- Perform emergency or routine repair of City-owned street, storm drain, catch basins or other public service maintenance work as required.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on tools and equipment as assigned.
- Paint or stencil traffic directional signs, crosswalks, stop bars, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking lot and center lines, and school crossings.
- Paint and stripe barricades and guard rails, cut and prepare stencils; maintain, clean, and repair painting equipment and stencils.
- Participates in the clean-up of homeless encampments, removal of illegally dumped items and waste, abatement of weed and invasive vegetation, and removal of graffiti.
- Remove debris from all areas within the public right-of-way, City facilities and parks.
- Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
- Operate mowers, tractors, trencher, vehicles, and equipment and utilize a variety of hand and power tools related to park landscape maintenance work; assist in maintenance of such equipment.
- Trim and remove trees; operate a boom truck, chippers machine, and chain saws.
- Assist in the set-up and take-down of equipment, portable tents, tables, chairs, bleachers for City programs and special events.
- Clean restrooms and pick up litter around parks and medians.
- Assist in the requisition and purchase of materials and supplies.
- Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and installation of the City's irrigation system.
- Water, mow, weed, trim, and renovate lawns; prune trees and shrubs; plant trees, flowers, and shrubs.
- Perform basic semi-skilled maintenance and repair work at entry level in either the plumbing, electrical, painting or carpentry trade areas.
- Inventory and maintain custodial supplies and equipment.
- Maintain and repair building ventilation systems; lighting systems, entry alarm and doors.
- Perform or assist in performing basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing and building maintenance work; Repair, and install tables, shelves, cabinets, countertops, and other wood equipment and fixtures.
- Make repairs on doors, windows, floors, lockers, gates, roofs and ceilings.
- Assist in the set-up and take-down of office equipment and furniture for City facilities.
- Prepare surfaces for painting, wallpapering, or staining; apply or strip paint or stain on building internal and external surfaces.
- Operate light duty equipment and machinery.
- Perform custodial cleaning and maintenance of City facilities and buildings.
- Respond to emergency calls; subject to call back at any time.
- This position requires participation in the after-hours standby rotation as scheduled, and may be required to work evenings and weekends.
- Perform various related other duties as required.
Any combination of education, training, and work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months paid full-time experience performing general construction and/or maintenance work.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Valid Class C California driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and evidence of insurance are required. A Class B California drivers' license is required within twelve (12) months of date of hire and contingent upon satisfactory completion of a one-year probationary period.
Knowledge of:
- Maintenance principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing streets and roadways, including alleys, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, asphalt pavement, crack seal application, concrete repair, traffic and street sign installation, repair, and reflectivity, and pavement markings.
- Traffic control procedures and traffic sign regulations.
- The operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment.
- Operational characteristics of construction maintenance and repair equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
- Basic mathematics.
- Safe driving rules and practices.
- Basic computer software related to work.
- English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
- Perform construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on streets and roadways, including alleys, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, asphalt pavement, crack seal application, concrete repair, traffic and street sign installation, repair, and reflectivity, and pavement markings.
- Troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
- Operate construction maintenance and repair equipment.
- Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
- Set up and operate traffic area construction zones, including cones, barricades, and flagging.
- Read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
- Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
- Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
- Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
- Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.

The employee constantly works outdoors and is subject to variable weather conditions and traffic, heat, dust, and moisture as well as mechanical and electrical hazards, and applied chemicals. The employee is subject to loud construction noise in particular areas such as power tools, compressors, chippers, and large-scale motorized equipment. The employee may work in vaults and underground storage chambers.

Physical Examination:
Employment offers are conditional based, upon the successful completion of a medical examination which may include drug and alcohol screening. Oath and Disaster Service Worker:
All City employees are required to sign the Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance for Public Employees upon the beginning of employment. Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all City employees are required to perform assigned emergency service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster and are required to sign a Disaster Service Worker Statement upon hire.
Salary : $50,365 - $64,280
