Description
Sioux City Parks and Recreation Department is seeking (80) eighty self-driven individuals to help our program be successful this summer.
Employees will work as a Lifeguard I or Lifeguard II (instruction Guard) and assist with and / or instruct swim lessons during the season at the City's swimming pools. Lifeguard I - Employees will work as a Lifeguard I and assist with swim lessons during the season at the City's swimming pools. Individual in this position must be available to assist instructors during swim lessons.
Lifeguard II - Instruction Guard
Employees will work as a Lifeguard II / Instructor Guard and Swim Lesson Instructor at the City swimming pools. Employees must be available to instruct a minimum number of swim lesson classes during the season, as defined by the Supervisor.
Employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of hours but will work less than 40 hours per week. Must be available to work nights, weekdays / weekends, and holidays.
Employment will be May 1, 2025 through August 25, 2025. Employees must be 15 years old by employment start date, May 1, 2025.
Successful completion of American Red Cross Lifeguard certification is required prior to employment start date.

Duties
- Patrols and observes swimming pool areas, deck and bathhouse;
- Performs rescues and utilizes his / her Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard training skills in both routine and emergency situations;
- Enforces pool rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the public;
- Assists in the cleaning and upkeep of the bathhouse, pool and deck, including, but not limited to, cleaning restroom facilities, vacuuming or sweeping the pool, picking up trash and litter.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Officials, other agencies, fellow employees and the general public.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Qualifications

Physical Requirements : Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds. Frequent walking, standing, swimming, and sitting on guard duty. Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, and towing of weight through water of up to 30 lbs. Normal range of vision for frequent scanning of pool surface and normal range of hearing.
Work Environment : Ninety percent of the work is performed outside with varying weather conditions to very hot temperatures.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Must be 15 years old by employment start date, May 1st, 2025.

Lifeguard I :
Experience as a Lifeguard is preferred but not required.
Lifeguard II :
Must possess a current WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certification.
Experience as a Lifeguard is preferred but not required.
