The Sioux City Public Library is on the hunt for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join our Youth Services Department as a Student Intern. If you’re passionate about literacy and love the idea of sharing your enthusiasm for reading with kids and teens in our community, this opportunity is made for you!
What you’ll do:
- Play a key role in promoting and implementing our Summer Reading programs.
- Help register children and teens for events that spark their love for books.
- Distribute exciting literacy-based incentives and spread the joy of reading.
- Encourage families to explore and engage in a variety of Library activities.
Who we’re looking for:
- Current high school or college students aged 16 or older.
- Someone who’s outgoing, creative, and enjoys working with children and teens.
- A team player ready to bring energy and ideas to the Library.
Details to know:
- Duration: May 27 - August 1, 2025
- Hours: 20 hours per week; schedule may vary based on programming needs, but most shifts will be Monday-Friday (9:00 AM - 5:00 PM) with occasional evening or weekend events.
- Location: This position will be scheduled at the Aalfs Downtown Library, Morningside Branch Library and Perry Creek Branch Library.

Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Ability to follow instructions and accept constructive criticism; Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you, ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer), ability to see details at a distance, ability to identify and understand the speech of another person, ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.Job Knowledge: Must have general knowledge, job skills and abilities associated with their particular work assignment; Good knowledge of the handling the public; ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Ability to express oneself clearly both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public; Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.
Physical Requirements: Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds. Good physical condition.
Work Environment: Work may be performed inside a typical inside office environment with appropriate heating and cooling or in outdoor field conditions, which include varying weather conditions, occupational or environmental hazards typically associated with general public contact, and varying street level noises; and touring work sites that are in various stages of development.
Applicants for this class must be currently enrolled students in a degree program in good standing at an accredited technical school, college or university.
