The Sioux City Transit Department is accepting applications for a (Bus Driver) Motor Coach Operator to drive a City bus. This position requires operating a Transit bus in this Sioux City metro area and transporting citizens in a safe and professional manner. The position keeps simple records and makes reports. Employee must know and obey safety and traffic regulations, have neat appearance, be courteous and get along with the public and coworkers.
Required: Commercial Driver's License Class A or (Class B with passenger endorsement). A CDL Permit is acceptable provided the applicant has a valid CDL Permit at the time of application.
Must possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements within (3) three months of the date of employment.
Candidate must pass the minimum physical requirements as prescribed by the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
A Driving History Record must be provided to the Transit department at the time of your interview. The Driving History Record must be issued by your state's Department of Motor Vehicle and issued within 30 days of your interview date.
This position will work 40 hours per week. When the interests of the Transit department so require, employee must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed, including evenings and Saturdays.

- Operates transit vehicles on assigned routes maintaining established time schedules or to specified destinations according to time schedules, complying with traffic regulations to ensure that passengers have a smooth and safe ride.
- Provides information to the public regarding transportation services and transit policy.
- Performs pre-operation safety inspections, requests servicing and repairs verbally and in writing as necessary.
- Maintains schedules and operates transit equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Maintains all required passenger and vehicle records.
- Responds to inquiries and complaints from the public regarding services provided; assures that appropriate and accurate information is provided.
- Assists elderly customers and persons with disabilities as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, including the securement of mobility aids and physically evacuates passengers in any emergency situations.
- Provides information to supervisor regarding route problems or traffic changes.
- Provides detailed reports of accidents or incidents.
- Collects appropriate passenger fares.
- Practices safety at all times in performance of required duties.
- Responds to citizens’ questions and concerns in a courteous and timely manner.
- Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
- Handle passenger emergencies or disruptions.
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position as assigned by the supervisor.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Job Knowledge: Good knowledge of City traffic rules and regulations; Knowledge of the safe operation of a public transit bus, including complete familiarization with its systems and safety features; geography and roadways of an assigned route and of the entire Municipality; traffic rules, regulations, and laws.
Ability to: operate a bus in a safe, efficient, and timely manner to include compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and standards. Ability to promote public transit ridership; and to initiate and maintain a professional working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and passengers. Ability to operate and/or utilize all standard safety equipment installed in transit passenger vehicles, including any other equipment required by federal, state, or local regulations; knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to customers (external and internal). Requires the ability to write and speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees and patrons; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process, procedures, programs and services; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions; giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times; actively looking for way to help people; being away of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do; talking to others to convey information effectively.
Physical Requirements: Freedom from such physical defects as would impair operating ability. Ability to see details at a distance; ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a motor vehicle to exact positions; ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from you, or to judge the distance between you and an object; ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting or standing. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
Regularly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment: Work is normally performed while sitting for long periods of time in a motor vehicle. Work also requires periodic standing to assist passengers; moderate lifting, bending, and crouching may be required to assist passengers in boarding and exiting transit vehicles. When in the field, the employee may be exposed to hazards related to adverse weather conditions or vehicular traffic.
- Class A or B Commercial Learners Permit is required at the time of application.
- Work experience of at least one (1) year dealing directly with the public.
