Description
Our Sioux City Water Treatment Plant is seeking an enthusiastic, self-directed Water Plant Operator-in-Training to work under general direction of the Water Plant Manager.
The individual will learn to operate and maintain the Water Treatment Plants and associated facilities.
Required: must possess a valid driver's license.
Within 18 months of appointment a certification by the State of Iowa as a Grade 1 Water Treatment and Distribution Operator is required.
Within 3 years of appointment a certification by the State of Iowa as a Grade II Water Treatment and Distribution Operator is required.
Normal work hours will be Monday -Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. This position will also be required to work afternoon (3:00 PM to 11:00 PM) shifts and graveyard shifts (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM) as assigned during training. Main working location is the Zenith Water Treatment Plant, 1101 Tri View Avenue, Sioux City, Iowa.

Duties
- Monitor plant and pump station operations and controls; conduct routine inspections of all related facilities.
- Operate, monitor and adjust chemical dosage
- Operate, monitor and control the distribution system to meet demands.
- Collect water samples, conduct tests and analyze results to maintain proper quality control.
- Perform maintenance and repair work on plant facilities, pumps, wells and related equipment.
- Monitor facilities and equipment to identify and repair leaks or other malfunctions.
- Operate, maintain and wash granular media filters.
- Receive, record and dispatch after hours calls for service.
- Record readings from gauges and meters in proper logs.
- Clean, strip and wax floors; clean and maintain assigned areas.
- May assist in maintenance and repair work.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work; accept "on-call" rotation as assigned.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, City officials and regulatory personnel.
- Regularly lifts up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds.
- Expected to temporarily perform duties outside of normal classification in the event of a declared emergency. In the event that an employee is excused from work other than being sick, they will be required to report to work in a state of declared emergency.
Qualifications
Cognitive Demands, Skills and Abilities: Requires a thorough knowledge of the maintenance and repair of machinery and related mechanical equipment, the overall pumping and water treatment/purification process and system, personal computers and related software, laboratory equipment and complex chemical tests for water quality. Ability to read meters, gauges and charts and maintain routine records; operate pumps, hand tools, mowers, computers and small trucks. Ability to work alone and without immediate supervision.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication: Requires effective communication skills and the ability to provide assistance to employees. Requires the ability to speak clearly, distinctly and effectively with fellow employees; read in English and compare similarities and differences between words and series of numbers; apply common sense understanding to the work process and procedures; and to provide and follow verbal and written instructions.

Minimum Required Qualifications
An operator-in-training must obtain a Grade I Water Treatment License and Grade I Water Distribution License within eighteen (18) months of appointment. A Grade II Water Treatment Operator's License and Grade II Water Distribution License must be obtained within (3) three years of appointment.
