STARTING WAGE: $2772.00 - $3907.20 (bi-weekly; exempt)

  3. Work/Life Balance – The Criminal Analyst position will serve Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm most commonly. Additional hours may be needed in times of great need, time sensitivity, or emergency. The SFPD serves its community 24/7/365. This is not a remote position; the individual hired will be located full-time primarily out of the Law Enforcement Center in Downtown Sioux Falls.

Job Summary

Coordinate and provide research and analytical support of specific criminal activity in support of the mission of the Sioux Falls Police Department.

  1. Collect, categorize, and analyze complex qualitative and quantitative data from a variety of sources pertaining to past and current criminal activity. Prepare and disseminate reports using various illustrative and statistical methods.
  2. Make recommendations pertaining to existing and anticipated criminal activity to command staff personnel in order to increase the effectiveness of patrol deployment, criminal investigations, crime prevention, and the apprehension of suspects.
  3. Plan, oversee, and coordinate administrative/operational analysis projects working with department personnel, outside agencies, and various citizen groups. Make recommendations to the command staff as to where department resources are most needed.
  4. Conduct statistical research studies and analysis of criminal activity including emerging series and patterns of specific criminal activity. Gather information from police reports and other criminal and noncriminal information sources. Create and coordinate the analysis of long-term chronic trends and problems.
  5. Prepare summaries and reports based on analysis including analytical charts, graphs, and maps. Submit intelligence reports to nationally recognized law enforcement organizations. Maintain confidential contacts with other law enforcement agencies for information sharing purposes.
  6. Interact, provide information, and serve as a resource to the SFPD Real Time Information Center and South Dakota Fusion Center.
  7. Utilize and maintain existing departmental software programs to gather quantitative and qualitative data to increase the effectiveness of patrol deployment.
  8. Identify areas of the city where various types of criminal activity are increasing. Assist with creating strategies for addressing problem areas.
  9. Develop analytical and statistical information for administration, detectives, and officers.
  10. Learn, identify, and apply modern practices based on current trends in the criminal analysis profession.
  11. Perform other such duties and functions as are outlined for this position in the departmental position result description and performance standard.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in criminal justice, computer science, statistics, or a related field or three (3) years’ work experience in crime analysis work or related statistical research; or any combination of education, training, and experience that has provided the individual the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the tasks of a crime analyst that is acceptable by the hiring authority.

Must be a United States citizen.

Has not unlawfully used any prescribed drug, controlled substance, or marijuana within one year before the time of application.

Must have no convictions of any crime by any state or federal government punishable by imprisonment in a federal or state penitentiary.

Must possess or be able to obtain prior to hire a valid driver’s license.

Preemployment Screenings

Preemployment screenings may include, but are not limited to, the following: drug screen, references, driver history, and full criminal background, including a polygraph.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to rapidly acquire working knowledge of modern approved principles, practices, systems, and procedures of crime analysis and police work.

Ability to work independently and proactively with integrity at all times.

Comprehensive knowledge of state laws and City ordinances.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, including drafting and preparing formal written reports and analytical data presentations.

Knowledge of, and ability to use, personal and mainframe computer software applications.

Recognize how individual actions impact the City’s public service role; act in the public interest by providing reliable information and high quality, consistent service; take advantage of opportunities to improve service and build positive community relationships.

Ability to take independent action within his/her scope of responsibility; look for opportunities for innovation and improvement; receptive to new ideas and information; look for opportunities to learn from others or on the job and apply new skills and knowledge to daily work. Perform tasks with little supervision or direction.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships while representing a positive image of the Sioux Falls Police Department and City of Sioux Falls.

Ability to comply with orders, policies, and regulations governing the activities of the Police Department and the City of Sioux Falls.
