JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the City Engineer, performs general, semi-skilled manual labor in the Engineering Division. May assist in other divisions of the Public Works Department, as assigned.This position performs technical duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, signs, and other traffic control systems.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Installs and maintains traffic signs, traffic signals, caution lights, school flashers, pedestrian signals, radar signs, and other traffic control devices and systems.
- Assists with the repair of traffic signals which may include replacement of electronic parts, aerial work in a bucket truck, and traffic control.
- Operates bucket truck as part of the installation, repair, and maintenance of signs and signals.
- Installs, and maintains pavement markings.
- Locates underground wires and conduits.
- Assists with other Traffic Engineering duties and projects, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
- Knowledge of traffic control cabinet components.
- Knowledge of traffic control software.
- Knowledge of fiber optic and electrical wiring principles.
- Knowledge of the geography of the city, including roads, streets, and subdivisions.
- Skill in the construction, installation, and repair of traffic signals and other traffic control devices.
- Skill in the operation of a bucket truck.
- Skill in dealing with the general public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS PLEASE
The City Engineer assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include MUTCD guidelines and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK PLEASE REVIEW AND EDIT AS NEEDED
- The work consists of related technical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to installs, maintain, and repair traffic signals and other traffic control systems. Successful performance in this position contributes to the safety of city streets.

- Contacts are typically with co‑workers, other city employees, contractors, representatives of Georgia Power, and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and inclement weather. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED; Supplemented by five (5) months previous experience and/or training that includes installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signage, signals, and pavement markings; or
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
- Ability to obtain IMSA Work Zone Safety and IMSA TST Level I certifications within one (1) year of hire.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Must successfully pass criminal background and Motor Vehicle checks.
- Must successfully pass post-offer drug screening and physical.
