POSITION SUMMARY:
The South Bend Animal Resource Center (SBARC) is responsible for animal welfare services in the City of South
Bend. SBARC is the enforcement authority for animal and public safety welfare, an animal shelter facility, and a
resource to ensure the proper care of the animals in our community. The part-time Shelter Veterinarian will be
responsible for ensuring high-quality medical care for the animals in SBARC’s care as well as a resource for the
community through organized opportunities.
The Shelter Veterinarian will work with the Shelter Manager to ensure that all animals in the care of SBARC have
proper medical treatment, complete procedures to ensure compliance with the city code such as administering
vaccinations and completing spay/neuter procedures, and provide opportunities to offer no or low-cost treatments
to benefit our communities’ pets.
This is a part-time position for veterinarian service provision for 20-30 hours per week. There is an opportunity for
flexibility of when work is performed and the final schedule will be determined in consultation with the selected
candidate. Some nights, weekends, and/or holidays may be required, as agreed upon.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervision of staff assisting with surgeries and/or exams during the procedure, as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Diagnose, treat, triage, examine, and provide routine shelter medicine to shelter animals.
- Assist in the design and implementation of medical and general care protocols.
- Ensure proper documentation of animals, including condition and the provided treatment in accordance
- Consult and advise on health and related aspects of care for animals at SBARC, including but not limited
euthanasia, and disease prevention in the shelter.
- Lead weekly (at a minimum) medical rounds and organize treatment plans for shelter animals.
- Perform surgical procedures on shelter animals, as needed (for example, spay/neuter, hernia repair, tumor
- Administer medications and other treatments as identified in treatment plans.
- Work with SBARC team to provide outstanding patient care to publicly owned and shelter animals,
- Monitor all animals’ condition and provide care directly, or through guidance to other staff, following
- Provide training, oversight, mentoring, and consultation for technical and support staff, interns, and/or
- Maintain pharmacy and medical inventory (including controlled substances) by performing regular audits
- Maintain and reconcile medicine logs, including controlled drug log in accordance of DEA guidelines, and
- Maintains clean and sanitary equipment.
- Ensures animals have appropriate after-care following procedures, including assisting with cleaning
- Handles and treats all species of animals in a humane manner.
- Enforces city, state, and federal laws regarding animal care and control.
- Work with SBARC staff to ensure operation of the shelter runs smoothly by ensuring animals are ready
- Participate in the development and implementation of programming and/or events that support the health
- Other duties assigned by the Shelter Manager
NON-ESSENTIAL/MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assumes additional responsibilities as directed and as they relate to the overall function of SBARC.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

- Graduation from an accredited college with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree is required.
- Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine is required.
- Two or more years’ experience practicing Veterinary Medicine in a veterinary clinic, hospital, and/or animal shelter or control facility desired.
- Experience in high volume spay/neuter clinic and/or post graduate surgical training preferred.
- Experience in emergency medicine and veterinary forensics a plus.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered

CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATION:
- Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine required.
- DEA Certification and CSR- or ability to obtain.
- Valid Driver’s license required.

Medical equipment and materials, medications, phone, personal computer, copy machine, fax machine, and cleaning tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is mainly performed in an indoor setting, with moderate inside temperatures, occasionally works in outside
weather conditions. Work environment may have regular exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as
zoonotic disease, parasites, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
pathogenic substances, animal attacks or animal bites. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud.
The entire office is smoke-free.
