POSITION OBJECTIVES
Under the general supervision of departmental superiors, incumbent is responsible for combating and extinguishing fires, maintaining fire rescue and medical equipment and apparatus, responding to and providing first aid and / or basic life support, and maintaining quarters. Work may be performed under situations extremely hazardous to personal health and safety. Work is reviewed through evaluations and daily feedback.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responds to emergencies with a fire or rescue unit.
- Answers medical emergencies, as a basic or advanced life support / transport unit.
- Removes, extracts, and rescues persons from danger.
- Recognizes acute symptoms requiring immediate care; administers life-saving rescue procedures to injured or afflicted persons.
- Performs salvage operations including throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris, and placing smoke ejectors. Performs fire company inspections, and pre-fire planning.
- Connects hose to hydrants and pumps; joins hose sections and connects nozzles to hose; enters burning buildings with or without hose lines; operates nozzles.
- Operates hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires; raises and climbs ladders; ventilates buildings to remove smoke and toxic gases.
- Makes daily inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects; performs cleaning and maintenance tasks in and about assigned station.
- Aids in the mitigation of other emergencies as directed by supervisor.
- Attends instruction sessions in firefighting methods; equipment operation, rescue procedures, emergency medical procedures, hazardous materials mitigation, and related subjects.
- Recognizes hazardous material situations; makes identification of unknown substances through the use of specialized charts, tables, and testing equipment; sets up decontamination procedures; assists State agencies in the removal / disposal of hazardous material.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma, GED, or other certificate of competency. Must possess the following : a State of Florida firefighter certification as certified by the Division of State Fire Marshal, a valid Florida Emergency Medical Technician certification issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance (Paramedic Preferred) and possession of and ability to maintain a valid Florida driver's license. A valid State of Florida pump operator certification by the Bureau of Fire Standards & Training is preferred. May be required to enroll in the Paramedic Program within three (3) years. Applicant must be nicotine free and conform to the current tattoo policy.
