What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Intern position at City of South Lake Tahoe?
Under general direction of the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney, the Legal Intern assists the City Attorney’s Office with preparing legal memoranda, drafting ordinances, resolutions, and contracts; assists the City Attorney’s Office with drafting motions and pleadings in civil litigation; and performs other related duties as assigned by the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney.
- Assists the City Attorney’s Office with providing legal advice memoranda on matters pertaining to City business as assigned by the City Attorney and Assistant City Attorney.
- Assists the City Attorney’s Office with researching, drafting, and reviewing City contracts, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents relative to the administration of legal processes affecting the City.
- Assists the City Attorney’s Office with reviews and draft updates of ordinances necessary for municipal compliance with state and federal laws, including environmental, financial disclosure, conflicts of interest, political reform, subdivision, planning, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency regulations, and housing laws.
- Assists the City Attorney’s Office with drafting motions and pleadings in civil litigation involving the City.
- Examines and analyzes court decisions and federal, state, and local legislation to determine their effect upon City affairs.

Ability to:
Draft legal documents including contracts, leases, resolutions, ordinances, court pleadings, and briefs.
Review and propose solutions to legal issues, including identifying alternative solutions and consequences of proposed actions.
Explain and apply legal principles to the programs, policies, and operations of the City government.
Understand, interpret, and apply laws, regulations and codes.
Assist the City Attorney’s Office in drafting motions and pleadings for legal proceedings in the state or federal courts and in administrative proceedings. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
Work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience Guidelines -
Education/Training:
Have completed their first year at a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA).
