What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Tax Collector position at City of South Portland?
The City of South Portland is currently seeking a 37.5 hour a week (four-day workweek) full-time Deputy Tax Collector to join our Finance Department. This is an opportunity to join a well-run city and play a part in serving our community with further opportunities for professional growth.
Position Summary: This position is responsible for the oversight and supervision of the Treasury Office staff and functions to complete the annual billing and collection of taxes, registration of motor vehicles, and receipt of other amounts owed to the City. This is a customer facing operation similar to a bank lobby. This Office receives records and deposits all funds collected by the City. Work is performed in accordance with laws and statutes for the State of Maine, Finance department rules and regulations, use of technology and requires excellent customer service skills.
Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance related discipline; extensive similar experience may be considered as substitute for education requirement.
Experience: : Ideal candidate must have demonstrated solid experience in performing and supervising staff who perform tax billing and collections, cash handling, financial accounting tasks and direct customer service, preferably in a municipal setting. Must be proficient in computer skills and use technology in everyday work including Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience using Munis and TRIO highly preferred.
Maine Municipal Tax Collectors' and Treasurers' Association (MMTCTA) Certification as a Tax Collector is required, and successful candidates will be required to obtain this certification as soon as possible from date of hire if they do not already have it. This certification must be maintained throughout employment with the City of South Portland.

Salary Range: $70,882-$80,769 annually depending on experience. This position is eligible for annual step increases, and possible annual cost of living increases as approved by the City Council.
