What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Inspector II position at City of South Salt Lake?
The Engineering Inspector II reports to the City Engineer; performs quality assurance inspections on a variety of civil engineering and public works projects constructed by private developers, utility companies, City personnel, or contractors hired by the city. Ensures that projects the city will maintain or pay for meet appropriate City, industry, City, State and Federal standards. Assists with technical duties related to planning, designing, and coordinating the development, and construction of City streets, curb, gutter, sidewalks, water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drain systems, parks, and other capital improvements.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Provides inspection services for the construction of City public works projects including streets, curb, gutter, sidewalks, water lines, sanitary sewer lines, storm drain systems, parks, and other capital improvements .
1.1 Assists City engineer in performing design, specification writing and cost estimating.
1.2 Conducts research on property boundaries, rights-of-way, easements, and existing improvements
1.3 Conducts studies to support project design and research and obtains funding sources.
1.4 Reads and interprets drawings and determines plan conformity to established standards.
1.5 Maintains files and up-to-date records such as as-built drawings, maps, etc.
1.6 Uses GIS and other asset management programs for decision-making purposes : coordinates GIS activities with the City GIS Technician.
1.7 Reviews pay requests and change orders from contractors and advises City Engineer regarding payments to contractors.
1.8 Prepares field notes to document contractor progress.
1.9 Approves Traffic Control plans.
2.1 Reads, interprets plans, and inspects installation of streets, curb, gutter, sidewalk, storm drains, sanitary sewer lines, water lines, water meters, hydrants, service lines, fire lines, and related utilities and structures.
2.2 With the help of the City GIS Technician, compiles, maintains, and provides storm drain, water, sewer, fire line and other related utility location information.
2.3 Tests materials for compliance to standards and project specifications
2.4 Approves continuance of work progress or issues "stop work" notices based upon compliance.
2.5 Notifies contractors of unacceptable construction materials and performance.
2.6 Maintains records and notes of field inspection findings.
2.7 Monitors testing equipment and ensures proper working conditions and accuracy.
2.8 Issues permits for street excavation and other construction activities.
2.9 Assists in the preparation of engineering plans and specifications, bidding process, competency review of contractors and vendors, and selection criteria for public contracts.
3.1 Evaluates utility, drainage, right-of-way, and other related issues.
3.2 Ensures compliance with codes and standards.
4.1 Responds to inquiries from other government agencies, contractors, developers, property owners, staff, and the public.
4.2 Attends meetings and represents the city's interests with governmental organizations.
5.1 Verifies structure layouts, and grades.
5.2 Prepares and disseminates incoming and outgoing correspondence.
5.3 Checks public works projects for compliance with project plans and specifications
5.4 Works with contractors, and City personnel to ensure construction projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
5.5 Discusses construction problems with contractors; evaluates scope of problem and determines alternate courses of action; exercises professional judgement where errors could be costly.
5.6 Reviews pay requests and change orders from contractors and advises City Engineer regarding payments to contractors.
5.7 Prepares field notes on document contractor progress
5.8 Approves traffic control plans.
