What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Swim Lesson Instructor position at City of South St. Paul?
The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible to instruct students of all ages in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program or other similar swim program. This is a seasonal position and hours of work will vary. Evening and weekend hours are to be expected.
The job duties and/or essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Ensure care and safety of all students of the program
- Administer instruction/direction to students in the swim program to ensure they develop and gain the swimming skills and techniques being taught. Instruction to be administered using a positive approach including providing feedback individually and/or in a group setting.
- Enforcement of pool safety policies and procedures
- Detect and respond to pool emergencies, including water rescue and administration of first aid
- Provide direction to pool staff and patrons in the event of an emergency
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required
Age 18 or older; Current Swim Instructor Certification, First Aid, CPR, and AED; good communication and customer relation skills; prior swim lesson instruction experience desired
Have appropriate certification and skill to instruct and teach swimming lessons in accordance with the swim program. Ability to monitor and respond to pool incidents, including water rescue and first aid. Knowledge and ability to express directions, demonstrate skills, and communicate with patrons and co-workers. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. The ability to perform the following work tasks with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Knowledge of swimming skills for each swim level program being taught
- Knowledge and ability to express direction, demonstrate skills, and provide students with support and assistance to learn proper swimming skills
- Ability to promote a fun and positive atmosphere for patrons
- Ability to effectively deal with pool and/or patron disciplinary issues in accordance with establish procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patrons and co-workers
- Ability to be flexible with work hours, work independently, and complete job tasks as assigned
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
Work Environment/Physical Job Requirements: Employee is required to frequently to talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands and fingers dexterously, reach with hands and arms; intermittently sits, stoops, kneels and/or crouches. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Exposure to inside environmental conditions, including wet floors, outside environmental conditions in a variety of weather conditions, and exposure to noise.
