The City of Spencer has an opening for a full-time 911 Dispatcher to act as a communication point for emergency and non-emergency calls. The ideal candidate must be able to operate efficiently in a high-stress environment while prioritizing multiple duties at once, be an excellent communicator and able to remain calm and composed, especially in emergency situations. This position is an emergency-responder role.
Shift: Friday - Tuesday, Midnight - 8am
$21.55/hour .50/hr differential for hours worked between 4pm-8am
*Must have flexibility to train on other shifts for the first 16 weeks, then flexibility to cover other shifts as needed.*
Responsibilities
- Receive emergency and non-emergency calls and record significant information
- Address problems and requests by transmitting information or providing solutions
- Receive and dispatch orders for products or deliveries
- Prioritize calls according to urgency and importance
- Use radio, phone or computer to send crews, vehicles or other field units to appropriate locations
- Monitor the route and status of field units to coordinate and prioritize their schedule
- Provide field units with information about orders, traffic, obstacles and requirements
- Enter data in computer system and maintain logs and records of calls, activities and other information
Skills Required
- Proven experience as dispatcher or relevant position preferred, but will train the right candidate
- Proficient in English (oral and written)
- Ability to identify navigational directions (East/West/North/South)
- Knowledge of the geography of the City, County and State
- Outstanding organizational and multitasking abilities
- Active listener with excellent communication skills with clear speaking voice
- Sound judgement and critical thinking
- Ability to attend & graduate State required 40-hour telecommunicator school (company-paid)
- Must have or be able to attain Emergency Medical Dispatch and IOWA/NCIC certification (company-paid)
- Knowledge of or ability to train in the use of the police radio, teletype & computer
- Proficient typing skills & basic knowledge of or ability to learn 10-code, military time & phonetic alphabet
- Possess calm, relaxed demeanor and non-combative attitude
- Experience with working with the general public
- Mentally and physically able to handle stress of position
- Reliable transportation to get to and from work with a good work attendance record
