JOB DESCRIPTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
The incumbent is responsible for the development, management, intellectual integrity, and design of all museum exhibits, including interpretive signage, digital interactive design, research, traveling exhibits, and online exhibits. Assists the Curator and Collections Manager with the care and management of all collections, proactively develops new collections, and enhances and updates current collections.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers; maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.
2.Work with the Curator and Director to determine priorities for exhibit content, design, interpretation, and scheduling; work with the Marketing Manager to produce exhibit promotional materials and communications.
3.Collaborate with community partners to develop off-site exhibit and educational content.
4.Stay abreast of current developments in visitor experience design, relevant technology and software, and accessibility standards.
5.Work with the Exhibits Manager to manage current exhibits, interactive devices, lighting and other multimedia content.
6.Oversee exhibit volunteers and manage relationships with guest curators, outside contractors, or partner organizations.
7.Under supervision of the Curator, oversee proactive collections development planning and implementation, including organizing community collection events and meeting with potential donors and stakeholders.
8.Assist collections staff in cataloging, research, and care for all collections.
9.Assist staff with major museum events and outreach activities.
10.Perform other duties as required or assigned.
SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have direct reports, however may be required to periodically train and direct up to ten volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in museum studies, graphic design, art, American history, public history, liberal arts, or related field; graduate degree in a related field preferred; three or more years of related experience and/or training (museum or design experience) required; three years of experience in the field required, and one year of management experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess a valid Arkansas Driver’s License.

Frequent contact with visitors, members of the public, professionals in the field, and partner organizations.

USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTERS
Must be proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft Office Suite and other word processing programs, and standard office equipment. Must be expert in the use of design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, and with the tools of exhibit design such as large scale-printers and other complex equipment.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff.
Must possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; exercise good judgment; plan, multitask, and problem solve; work in a team-oriented environment. Working knowledge of general philosophy, principles, and practices of history museums; considerable knowledge of museum exhibit design; good working knowledge of computer database systems; considerable knowledge of ethics and best practices related to universal design for accessibility; working knowledge of environmental control, pest management, security, and risk management; working knowledge of intellectual property and rights and reproductions; considerable research skills; working knowledge of principles and practices of office management.
