The City of Springdale Parks & Recreation Department is accepting applications for the position of Parks Maintenance Worker. Daytime hours are required Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with occasional additional weekend and evening hours.
This position includes a salary range of $24.38 - $34.31 per hour and offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, and contributions to the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System. This is a non-exempt FLSA position.
Job Purpose and Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the Parks Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing semi-skilled maintenance tasks such as grass cutting; laying out, maintaining, and repairing athletic fields and courts; and performing a variety of tasks required to support the Parks and Recreation Department.
Essential Functions and Duties

- Operates pick-up trucks, dump trucks with trailers, light industrial-type or farm-type tractors with front-end or back-end attachments, and snowplows and salt spreaders during winter months
- Operates woodchippers, chainsaws, axes, and topping shears
- Cuts grass, fertilizes, weeds, and removes snow and ice from sidewalks
- Maintains landscaped areas by planting and pruning trees, shrubs and flowers’ weeding and mulching landscape beds; and removing trees and stumps
- Maintains ball fields by replacing dirt, dragging and lining fields, and putting up soccer goals
- Inspects and repairs playgrounds, bleachers and benches
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to power equipment and vehicles
- Washes, cleans, waxes, and paints equipment
- Makes minor electrical and plumbing repairs
- Paints interior and exterior walls, replaces floor and ceiling tiles, replaces light bulbs, repairs fixtures, mops and waxes floors, cleans restrooms, and washes windows
- Picks up litter and empties garbage cans
- May operate front loader, backhoe, bucket truck, and other specialized equipment with supervision
- Performs any and all other duties as assigned in an efficient and timely manner
Experience and Qualifications
Must be a U.S. citizen; must be at least eighteen (18) years of age; must have obtained a high school diploma or General Education Degree (G.E.D.) equivalent; and must obtain a minimum of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement within six (6) months of employment and retain it throughout course of employment with the City.
- Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods, tools, materials, and supplies
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- Ability and willingness to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods and to work under adverse weather conditions
- Either possess or be able to obtain Commercial Applicator License to spray pesticides and NRPA Playground Safety Inspector Certification
- Ability to adhere to proper safety practices and standards
- Ability to read at a level sufficiently to follow repair instructions
- Ability to keep daily written records of completed maintenance tasks as well as maintain detailed inspection and service records of power equipment and vehicles
The Parks Maintenance Worker must have knowledge of building and grounds maintenance methods, tools, materials, and supplies; experience performing routine maintenance; strong organizational and follow-up skills; strong attention to detail; professional presentation and attitude; and strong time management skills.
Working Conditions
The Parks Maintenance Worker often works with hazardous equipment and in hazardous situations. Injuries are possible from electrical shocks, cuts, or falls. They are often exposed to unusual or harsh elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and loud noises. They frequently work in high places, such as on ladders and roofs.
Physical Requirements
Significant physical activity is required to frequently walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel. Must be able to constantly lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds, to often lift 50-75 pounds, and to occasionally lift 75-100 pounds; to stand or walk for a minimum of eight (8) hours a day; and to work at heights of up to forty (40) feet.
