Position Purpose/Summary
Responsible assisting in ensuring accurate and timely production of payroll at the Springfield Police Department. Conducts clerical work including review, verification, and auditing of payroll forms, records, and documents. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior in accordance with well-established procedures, with supervisory advice and assistance readily available upon request in difficult or unusual situations. Work is reviewed through internal checks and cash reconciliations.
Essential Functions
- Ensures receipt, processing, and review of employee time information.
- Prepares and maintains records and reports related to payroll, employee information, time sheets, deductions, salaries, and taxes.
- Work within Telestaff database daily, adjusting assignments, employee calendars and accrued time.
- Enters and verifies all Overtime and court slips for accuracy.
- Verifies all departmental payroll voucher totals to the computer-generated departmental total cards. Verifies individual payroll deduction and schedules gross deduction figures for disbursement to proper accounts.
- Distributes payroll checks on scheduled paydays.
- Verifies that all checks required are drawn in correct manner.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the operation of payroll denominators, adding machines, and similar office equipment not requiring special training.
- Working knowledge of modern clerical procedures and methods with particular reference to simple bookkeeping and cash handling procedures.
- Some knowledge of the law and ordinances governing activities of municipalities.
- Ability to make arithmetical computations, rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with municipal employees and the general public.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in business administration or office management.
- Two years of experience in the performance of difficult and varied clerical or payroll work.
