What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Recreation Leader - Camp STAR position at City of Springfield, MA?
Position Purpose/Summary
This is specialized, part time work that involves the leadership of activities and camper engagement in the Park Department's summer program for youth/young adults with and without disabilities at Camp STAR Angelina. It is a direct service position. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation Senior Project Manager, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, and Program Director in accordance with standard policies and procedures. Supervision is exercised over a small group of campers.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for supervision of campers to insure safety.
- Assist in planning and implementation of therapeutic recreation programs.
- Facilitate camper engagement and socialization during program delivery.
- Attend staff meetings and other meetings as needed.
- Assist participants with activities of daily living as needed, may include dressing, eating, and hygiene related activities as needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding and working knowledge of recreational activities and needs related to therapeutic populations, including youth and young adults with disabilities.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion, understanding, and acceptance when working with participants, families, and staff;
- Ability to express oneself clearly through written and verbal communication.
- Ability to lead small and large group activities.
Education and Experience
- Experience working with therapeutic populations in a recreation, camp, residential and/or home care program setting preferred.
