What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Prosecutor position at City of Springfield, Ohio?
This is entry-level professional legal work in the office of the Director of Law. The Assistant Prosecuting Attorney must be able to be present in the office during normal work hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and routinely travel to and from court. New attorneys encouraged to apply. Successful applicant will gain significant courtroom experience.
Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of legal services, which may be civil, administrative, criminal, or traffic law related. Work involves the exercise of independent judgment but, for the most part, involves routine legal matters. Work involves performing legal research, drafting documents, preparing pleadings, and other activities consistent with the practice of the profession and the responsibilities of the Department. Work also involves representing the City in civil, criminal, and traffic cases and appearing on behalf of the City before administrative boards and municipal, common pleas, and appellate courts. Work is performed under the general supervision of a more experienced attorney.Any one position may not include all of the specific duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed.

- Provides general legal counsel and advice on behalf of the Director of Law.
- Represents the City in criminal, traffic, civil, or administrative law matters.
- Performs legal research; drafts documents; analyzes legal problems and drafts opinions.
- Studies and evaluates claims by or against the City for the purpose of recommending compromise settlements; negotiates settlements.
- Provides other general legal and administrative support and assistance consistent with the legal profession and responsibilities of the Department of Law.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Considerable knowledge of the application of legal principles to individual cases or problems.
- Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and city ordinances.
- Considerable knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices of legal research.
- Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s Degree, Juris Doctorate Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of the Ohio Revised Code.
- Ability to prepare cases from initial filing through trial and appeal, possessing the ability to communicate effectively with Court personnel, staff, law enforcement, witnesses, and public officials.
- Ability to understand and interpret constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, and precedents.
- Ability to analyze facts, evidence, and precedents and arrive at logical interpretations.
- Ability to set forth findings of facts and decisions in written form.
- Ability to effectively represent the City in court and before administrative agencies.
- Ability to exercise negotiation skills, prepare legal documents and records; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and the legal profession.
