This is general custodial work in the care of public buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas. Work involves performing manual tasks related to the care and cleaning of the inside of public buildings, surrounding grounds and garage, and other areas as assigned. A custodian may be assigned, individually or as a member of a crew, to clean one or more floors of a large building, the grounds surrounding or adjacent to public buildings, or other areas, depending on the department or division. Most tasks are manual in nature and require the employee to lift, stoop, bend, carry, and move furniture and cleaning equipment while adhering to safety standards. Although the duties are varied, the work is performed according to readily available guidelines. Some employees assigned to a day or evening shift will be in contact with the general public and other municipal employees in the course of performing their duties. Assignments and instructions are received orally and in writing from a supervisor or lead worker who inspects work in progress or upon completion for adherence to instructions and work standards.Any one position may not include all of the specific duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and buffs floors, hallways, and stairways; vacuums, dusts, cleans, and maintains furniture, carpets, equipment, fixtures, window sills, railings, and blinds.
- Collects and removes wastepaper and trash from offices, rooms, halls, and restrooms; washes walls, windows, mirrors, light fixtures, and drinking fountains; disinfects toilets, wash bowls, and urinals.
- Replenishes towels, tissues, soaps, and other restroom supplies; unstops sinks, toilets, and drains; replaces light bulbs.
- Keeps outside premises in an orderly conditions; sweeps or shovels snow from walkways; cuts grass, waters lawn, and removes trash on premises; trims bushes; sweeps parking areas; applies sand and salt; cuts and removes weeds using hand and power equipment; may drive pickup or tractor with blade to remove snow from driveways and sidewalks; operates sidewalk vacuum machine.
- Moves and arranges furniture; maintains the security of the buildings at all times; secures doors and windows after the conclusion of business hours.

- Ability to learn the safety precautions, methods, materials, and equipment ordinarily used in cleaning buildings and grounds.
- Ability to perform the various custodial tasks associated with the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Ability to deal with the public or other employees in a pleasant, courteous manner as required by the position.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and building occupants.
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of the class.
- Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license as required by the position.
