This position involves highly skilled maintenance and repair work with a variety of automotive equipment, including but not limited to, heavy construction equipment, trucks, police vehicles, fire apparatus, and related equipment.
 
Work involves responsibility for the application of journeyman to master technician level automotive and mechanical maintenance knowledge and skills in the maintenance and repair of a municipal fleet. The work is complex and includes in-depth troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic equipment on vehicles, top quality bodywork and painting of vehicles, and the requirement to work on any and all equipment in the fleet. Employees in this position shall perform major overhauls, equipment rehabilitations and fabrications and scheduled preventive maintenance tasks as assigned by a supervisor. Work is performed with considerable technical independence under a supervisor who assigns and may review work upon completion. Work performance is reviewed through inspection of vehicle repair records and feedback from vehicle operators.Any one position may not include all of the specific duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties that may be performed.
 
  • Maintains and makes necessary repairs to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components on a variety of automotive and fire equipment.
  • Rebuilds or overhauls differentials and transmissions, rebuilds clutch housings, power takeoffs, hydraulics mechanisms and similar equipment and attached components on fire apparatus.
  • Makes road and operational tests to locate defects in all types of automotive equipment.
  • Responds occasionally to multiple alarm fires to maintain and service firefighting apparatus while in use.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, including changing oil and filter, lubricating and inspecting and replacing lights, brakes, tires, belts, exhaust system parts, etc. Drains and refills coolant systems and conducts pressure tests.
  • Tunes motors using standard test equipment; removes, disassembles, inspects, repairs, or replaces parts and components on gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Uses electric welder and acetylene torch to weld, braise, and heat metal to repair and fabricate parts or modify equipment for a variety of vehicles.
  • Repairs and services air and hydraulic brakes, standard and computerized ignition systems, hydraulic pumps and valves, fuel injection systems and emission control systems.
  • Overhauls and maintains carburetion and ignition systems; sets valves and replaces points and condensers in ignition systems, including synchronization and timing of each system separately.
  • Responds to emergency road calls from disabled City equipment and repairs and replaces tires.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Graduation of high school, vocational school, or GED; including or supplemented by a recognized training course in automotive mechanics which includes electrical, electronic, hydraulic equipment, engine and transmission repair.
  • Minimum of two years experience as a skilled mechanic with progressively responsible experience in the repair of automotive equipment or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsements (180 days given to obtain if necessary, employer assisted).
  • Possession of standard mechanic's tools.
  • Thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical/electronic methods, materials, tools, testing equipment, and techniques used in the repair of heavy-duty automotive equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operating principles of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel engines and of electrical, electronic and hydraulic systems affixed to vehicles.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques, oxyacetylene, arc and MIG as they relate to a variety of metals.
  • Knowledge of major and minor steel cutting and metal fabrication methods.
  • Knowledge of auto body repair and refinishing techniques.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing air conditioning systems and proper handling of refrigerants.
  • Skill in repairing firefighting pumps and plumbing on firefighting apparatus.
  • Skill in adapting available tools and repair parts to specific problems.
  • Skill in reading and understanding operation and maintenance manuals, including wiring and hydraulic diagrams for a variety of vehicles.
  • Skill in identifying mechanical, electrical/electronic and hydraulic malfunctions and determining how they can be prevented and corrected.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor under all kinds of weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain and upgrade skills for current and future equipment through self-study and attendance at training sessions.
  • Ability to work overtime and be called out at times other than regular working hours to respond to emergency conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisors, coworkers and other City employees.
