Responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws. A variety of duties in patrol, traffic, or crime investigation on an assigned shift (40 hours per week including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required).

Modern policing requires a list of tasks or duties which is so extensive as to fill hundreds of typed pages. It also requires both the willingness and ability to learn new methods or techniques. The general duties of police work involve the protection of life and property from unlawful attack as well as general services in protecting persons in jeopardy from any cause. The preservation of community safety and order, including the effective enforcement of laws and ordinances results in frequent contact with people in many varied situations.
This is general duty police work consisting of work in an assigned area, investigations and report of criminal or other harmful situations or acts and all work which is otherwise assigned. Such work must be performed within the law and in proper compliance with Divisional rules or supervisory orders. A police officer is required to exercise both initiative and discretion when faced with emergency or complicated situations. This work involves an element of personal danger. A police officer may be assigned to work in uniform or in plain clothes, by vehicle or by foot patrol, and (with specialized training) to highly technical duties.
- AGE: Must be 20 years of age at the time application is filed. Must be 21 years old on or before the day of successful completion of police academy training, or at time of appointment if the applicant is already a certified Ohio peace officer.
- EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
- PHYSICAL: Eyesight: 20/20 corrected, weight: In proportion to height MUST possess the overall ability to sufficiently perform all of the essential functions of the position.
- WRITTEN EXAM: Must achieve a passing score of 70%.

The City of Springfield also offers testing services through National Testing Network, Inc.
To register and schedule a test, go to www.nationaltestingnetwork.com then select Police Officer and sign up for the City of Springfield. All Candidates are required to complete the NTN Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). Candidates are asked to complete the PSSA (Public Safety Self Assessment) on a voluntary basis. The City of Springfield will contact candidates that will be invited to move forward in the selection process. DO NOT SUBMIT A CITY APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT UNTIL CONTACTED BY THE SPRINGFIELD DEPT. OF HUMAN RESOURCES. The National Testing Network charges a $55 fee, and will send test results to one participating city or agency. Tests results may be sent to multiple agencies for an additional fee of $15 each.
