Purpose of JobPerforms skilled construction work, including the operation of on and off-road motorized equipment. Essential Job DutiesOperates vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to street sweepers, loaders, graders, snow plows, street salting equipment, and dump and refuse trucks.Operates paving, asphalt, and concrete equipment for street construction and other projects.Removes brush and debris from city streets by operating a boom truck.Transports equipment or materials to and from designated job site.Performs skilled construction work involving excavation and welding as needed. Inspects, maintains and performs basic repairs and maintenance on equipment used.Routinely cleans and washes equipment and vehicles.Operates small motorized and hand tools to perform manual labor activities. Other Job DutiesPerforms manual labor as required including debris pickup, flagging traffic, mowing, clearing rights-of-way, and cleaning catch basins.Repairs roads, spreads gravel or digs ditches as a part of a street construction and maintenance crew.Responds to after-hours and emergency calls as required.Assists with loading and unloading trucks.Performs related work as required.Primary Job ChallengesMaintaining a working knowledge of all facets of equipment operations.Continuous learning to stay up-to-date on city, federal and state laws and regulations.Keeping up-to-date with current technology.Keeping up-to-date with policies and training.Equipment OperatedPersonal computer and/or tablet with associated application software and standard office equipment.Light and heavy equipment and machines, power and hand tools.Automobile and/or truck with two-way radio.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of the principles and practices of equipment and tools used in construction and maintenance.Knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.Knowledge of city and department rules and regulations.Ability to operate and service vehicles, equipment, machinery, power and hand tools.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to supervise unskilled workers.Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time at a steady pace, often under unfavorable weather conditions.Ability to create operational records.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly, both orally and in writing.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentWork both indoors and outdoors and will sit, stand, stoop, walk, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds). Employee will be exposed to biohazard waste, electrical currents, environmental hazards, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noise, machinery and its moving parts, noxious odors, poor ventilation, and work space restriction.QualificationsEducation and Experience: High school diploma with experience in the operation of equipment and machinery, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities.Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid Class A CDL driver license issued by the State of Tennessee. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
