Purpose of JobEmployee is responsible for performing skilled work in installing, repairing, and maintaining water and wastewater utility services. Essential Job DutiesInstalls, replaces, and repairs water and wastewater lines, service taps and connections, fire hydrants, valves, meter boxes, and cleanouts.Locates and repairs leaks in water lines. Maintains sanitary sewer mains and service lines and resolves problems when they arise.Raises and lowers manholes and meter boxes while maintaining the proper flush grade of the surrounding area.Taps water pressure lines, makes connections, and installs various devices.Establishes traffic control measures such as barricades and signs for utility work sites to detour traffic and maintain safety.Gathers and loads required materials and equipment to be used at the job.Other Job DutiesAssists in the locating of telephone lines, gas lines, and other underground utilities during excavation. Works on-call duty one of every four (4) weeks and must be available to respond to calls for service at any time during the seven (7) day period. Performs other related work as required.Primary Job ChallengesMaintaining a working knowledge of all facets of water and wastewater utility operations.Adjusting to diversity of various connections and the types of piping that are in a water and sewer system and the materials needed to repair each type of material.Equipment OperatedEmployee will operate an automobile and/or truck with a two-way radio.Employee will operate a variety of equipment including washer trucks, dump trucks, cutting saws, shovels, picks, pipe tools, wrenches and a variety of hand tools and power tools.Employee will operate standard office equipment such as a computer, copier, printer, and calculator. Key Competencies RequiredUnderstands the rules related to sample collection during an emergency repair to allow for compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Thorough knowledge of all city policies and procedures.Knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment and tools for all construction means and methods. Knowledge of all safety hazards and safety precautions that may become necessary.Knowledge of the care required for using and maintaining related equipment.Ability to use specialized tools to perform various jobs that are related to operation and maintenance. Ability to carry out both oral and written instructions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.Ability to perform outdoor work on lines and system for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions.Ability to recognize potential problems with city equipment, water and wastewater lines and structures.Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentEmployee will work primarily outdoors with the possibility of being exposed to adverse weather conditions. Employee may be required to sit, stand, stoop, walk, and lift light and heavy objects (more than 25 pounds). Employee may be exposed to loud noises, noxious odors, human waste, and hazardous chemicals.QualificationsEducation and Experience: Graduation from a standard high school, preferably with some water or wastewater construction experience, or a combination of experience and training equivalent to the required knowledge and abilities. Required Certifications/Licenses: Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Tennessee. The employee must obtain a Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License within twelve (12) months of hire. Must pass a drug screen and physical examination based on the essential functions of the job given by the city’s designated physician.
