What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. Head Recreation Leader - Camp STAR position at City of Springfield?
This is specialized recreation work with responsibility for exercising leadership in the Park Department's seasonal program involving the group management, planning, and programming of activities for participants in its therapeutic recreation program for youth/young adults with and without disabilities at Camp STAR Angelina. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direction of the Assistant Director of Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation Senior Project Manager, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, and Program Director in accordance with standard policies and procedures. Supervision is exercised over Therapeutic Recreation Leaders and a small group of campers, staff, and volunteers.
- Responsible for group management, camper supervision, and engagement for a variety of day-camp seasonal recreation activities.
- Provide 1-to-1 assistance to camper with physical, behavioral, social and/or emotional disability or medical concern to ensure camper participates fully in the camp program.
- Responsible for program facilitation in a variety of day-camp seasonal recreational activities, including but not limited to, arts and crafts, nature, dramatic play, swimming, sports and recreation, and all-camp special events and activities.
- Responsible for the supervision of Therapeutic Recreation Leader staff and campers as assigned.
- Assist in planning, evaluation, and facilitation of therapeutic recreation programs; including set-up, delivery and clean-up of program supplies.
- Facilitation of participants' engagement and socialization during program delivery.
- Attendance at staff meetings and other meetings as needed.
- Submission of daily/weekly group and activity reports, such as attendance, behavior, and group/program assessments to director.
- Assist participants with activities of daily living as needed, may include dressing, eating, and hygiene related activities.
- Performs related work as required.
- Understanding and working knowledge of recreational activities and needs related to therapeutic populations, including youth and young adults with disabilities.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion, understanding, acceptance when working with participants, families and staff.
- Ability to express oneself clearly through written and verbal communication.
- Ability to lead small and large group activities.
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Experience working with therapeutic populations in a recreation, camp, residential and/or home care program setting preferred.
- Current or ability to obtain CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
