About Us
The Public Works Department provides skilled and unskilled labor and is vital to the operations of the City of St. Augustine Beach. The Department provides sanitation, groundskeeping, and janitorial services, as well as drainage maintenance and general maintenance of roadways. Our crews are often the public face of the city, and our personnel are out working in the city daily.
Who we are seeking
We are currently seeking applicants for the entry-level position of Service Worker I. Ideal candidates enjoy working in a team dynamic, are capable of taking direction, enjoy working outdoors, and enjoy a variety of work tasks.
Primary Job Duties
Sanitation work, including household garbage collection, yard waste collection, recycling collection, and related tasks – accounting for 50-75% of daily routine. Maintenance of rights-of-way and City property by means of brush cutting, mowing, edging, string trimming, litter control and related tasks. Other routine work consisting of manual tasks requiring minimal specialized training and experience. Ability to efficiently conduct heavy physical labor, primarily in an outdoor environment. Work is typically under immediate supervision and direction of an Equipment Operator, Foreman, or Service Worker II, who lays out details for specific assignments and checks the work in progress and upon completion.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred – may substitute with appropriate work experience.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License (preference given for CDL Class A or B).
- Ability to speak standard English, understand oral instructions, and to read and write.
- Drug screen and physical required, clear background preferred (for work in PD).
Physical Requirements
- Willingness to perform routine manual work and excellent physical condition.
- Ability and stamina to lift heavy articles and equipment routinely weighing up to 80 pounds.
- Ability to work in outdoor environment including natural heat, cold, and harsh weather conditions.
- Ability to bend, kneel, and stoop to do the required work.
- Ability to carry and move tools and equipment without assistance.
