Field Maintenance Worker – Streets (Sign Crew)

The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is currently recruiting for the position of Field Maintenance Worker - Streets - Sign Crew. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled technical work in the maintenance, repair and construction of public roadway infrastructure including asphalt and concrete pavements, concrete curb and gutters, sidewalks, and related roadway appurtenances; and to support snow and ice removal operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Properly inspect and maintain vehicles, equipment, tools, and supplies.
• Drive trucks of various sizes and weights; haul, load and unload dirt, rock, construction equipment, etc.; dispose of roadbed materials; site restoration activities; operate chain saws, weed eaters, jack hammers, air compressors; install/repair sign posts, signs, reflective markers, bands, nut & bolts, straps, and other connection hardware ; cut and remove trees and weeds; hand paint curbs; spread salt and cinders; operate a platform lift truck, hand dig holes, etc.
• Knowledgeable of appropriate safety standards, procedures and equipment.
• Knowledgeable in traffic control deployment and placement, including spacing of signage and signage required for various conditions on or along the roadway, message board deployment and set up, etc.
• Able to call in locates, place sign orders with vendors, pick up materials when ready, order materials when supplies are low or exhausted. Organized so that these items are completed without supervisor assistance.
• Meet tight deadlines for special events as related to deployment of no parking signs, message boards, barricades, traffic control, temporary handicap zones, etc.
• Familiarity with hand cart striping equipment and roadway symbols such as turn arrows, yield triangles, striping, and stop bars.
• Mandatory attendance and participation in: rotating on-call schedule, assigned overtime, civil emergencies, severe weather events including flooding and snow removal operations, special events, and call-outs.
• Mathematically proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, trigonometry, and calculation of percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, etc.
• Respond to public inquiries and complaints.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

• High School diploma or G.E.D.; Associate degree in related field with experience in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred.
• Two years' experience related to roadway maintenance, repairs, and construction including operation of related equipment and tools, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Valid Missouri driver's license required.
• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
• Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certification required as a condition of employment and continued employment.
