Are you a personable, organized, and reliable full-time college student looking for interesting hands-on experience in a dynamic municipal human resources department? This internship gives robust experience in all aspects of human resources, to be career-ready for a full-time position in the public or private sector. This is an in-person position, so attending school locally to work onsite is required. Prefer sophomore or junior standing to allow for a one year or longer internship.
Hours
The intern will work approximately 18 to 20 hours per week when school is in session and up to 40 hours a week when school is not in session. Hours must be worked on site during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Reliable attendance is important for this position. The position will partner with the human resources staff in researching, planning, and coordinating a variety of programs including compensation, employee benefits, recruitment and selection, collective bargaining, labor relations, health insurance, employee wellness and safety, training, worker’s compensation, and other related projects. Possible projects include assisting with recruitment of staff for all City departments; researching and compiling reports; responding to surveys; supporting contract negotiations for the City’s labor unions; participating in a compensation program update; researching training options; and assisting with special projects assigned by the Director and Assistant Director of Human Resources. Once the successful candidate is trained and proficient, they will be given independent projects and work assignments in addition to working together with the team. May assist with office coverage answering phones and helping in-person customers. Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student, with sophomore or junior standing, earning a degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a similar field. Full time graduate students are welcome to apply but must be pursuing a master’s degree in a related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong computer proficiency, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are required. Applicants must have strong customer service skills to interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
If selected, successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen are required. This position pays $18.00/hr. This part-time position is pension qualified with the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) but is not eligible for health insurance benefits.
